George H. Matthews, age 64, of Lakeland, FL, passed away on January 6, 2025. George was born on April 21, 1960, at Fort Ord, CA, and grew up in Susquehanna, PA, where he graduated from Susquehanna Community High School in 1979. During his high school years, George was a standout athlete, earning athletic awards in both football and track.
After high school, George proudly served in the United States Army until 1984. Following his military service, George dedicated himself to his career, retiring in 2024 after many years of service with the City of Lake Alfred.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Shirley Matthews, his mother, Winifred Deakin, and his sister, Marian Lyons. George is survived by his sisters, Alice Matthews and Anne Labarre; father, Charles Matthews; nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, many cousins, and friends near and far.
A man of simple joys, George found peace in the outdoors. He loved hunting, fishing, and camping, but above all, he treasured time spent with his family and friends. A devoted member of Dixie Highway Baptist Church, George’s faith was a cornerstone of his life.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date in his hometown of Susquehanna, PA, where family and friends will gather to honor his memory.
