Mona Joyce Costley
August 31st, 1936 - December 26th, 2024
Mona passed away December 26th, 2024, at Brookdale Crossings.
She is preceded in death by her parents, and her companion of 30 years, Matthew J. Kavanagh III.
She is survived by her children: Les Costley(Gina), Casey Costley(Suzie), and Wade Costley. Grandchildren: LeslieAnn Costley Runyan(Randy), Lindsey Costley, Ashlen Costley, Landen Costley(Brennan), and great grandson Marvin Runyan.
Mona was born in Houston, TX. She was a proud Texan. She graduated from SMU with a BA in Education. Mona was a member of Delta Gamma Sorority. She was proud to be a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and Daughters of the Republic of Texas. Mona was a PEO member, and a former member of the chancel choir at First United Methodist Church in Colorado Springs. Her first teaching job was at Goose Creek Independent School District in Baytown, Texas, 1957-1960. In 1974, her then husband, Col. Albert W Costley was transferred to ENT AFB in Colorado Springs. Mona and her sons remained in Colorado Springs after she and Albert divorced in 1976. Mona went back to teaching in 1981 at Skyway Elementary School. She earned her Masters in Education from UCCS during this time. Mona retired in 1998, but returned to Skyway as a reading specialist 2001-2003. Mona was a beloved and respected teacher. She loved her students and co-workers. After retirement, Mona traveled the country and the world, with her long time friend, Mickey Kavanagh. They had many happy years together, until Mickey’s sudden passing in 2021.
Mona leaves behind loving family and friends. Her family wishes to express our gratitude and appreciation for all those who cared for Mona in the last few years, especially the caring staff at Brookdale at Skyline.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Anchor Center for Blind Children (Denver), Wounded Warriors, or, the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo.
Services will be held Monday, Feb. 10th, at 1:00 pm, at First United Methodist Church, in the chapel. 420 N Nevada Ave., Colorado Springs, CO.
