Hon Van Nguyen (1950-2024): A Life Remembered

    Hon Van Nguyen, born in Vietnam in 1950, departed this world on the morning of Sunday, December 22nd, 2024, in Las Vegas, Nevada, at the age of 74. His extraordinary life was defined by dedication, hard work, and a relentless pursuit of happiness and opportunity. Hon's journey was not without challenges, but his resilience and love for his family anchored him throughout his years.

    Early Life and Military Service

    Hon proudly served in the Vietnam Navy from 1968 to 1975, spending five years as a Lieutenant. This experience imparted upon him the values of discipline and commitment that would serve him well in life beyond military service. After completing his time in the Navy, Hon returned to his roots and began working on his family farm, always grateful for the opportunities that arose. His work ethic was exemplary, as he labored tirelessly to provide for his family. 

    A Loving Family Man

    On April 17th, 1978, Hon married Niem Lam, forging a loving partnership that would last for 46 years. Their journey together began in Vietnam, but it was during his migration to Canada in 1982 that Hon embarked on a new chapter. He dedicated himself to learning English and securing stable employment to facilitate Niem’s arrival. In 1985, the couple moved to Indiana, where they laid down roots in Fort Wayne, eventually welcoming their two children: Gary, born in 1986, and Brianna, born nine years later.

    Hon's dedication extended beyond work; he balanced raising a family with attaining an Associates Degree in Electrical Engineering Technology from Purdue University. This endeavor was accomplished while working full-time, highlighting his commitment to personal and professional growth. He eventually secured a highly regarded position as a Test Engineer at BAE Systems, where he contributed valuably for 18 years, alongside his wife, who also worked there. Throughout these experiences, Hon continuously offered words of wisdom to his children, often shared through simple yet profound lessons about hard work and the value of seizing opportunities.

    Retirement and Exploration

    After retiring in 2016, Hon and Niem embraced a new life in Las Vegas, Nevada. This period of retirement was marked by exploration and shared interests. Hon, possessing a quiet demeanor and an ever-present smile, never once, in their 46 years together, complained about a single meal prepared by his devoted wife. He spent his free time cultivating various interests, from learning guitar and basic French to mastering the English language. His love for travel led him to explore national parks, visit family in Vietnam, and indulge in the diverse culinary offerings of Las Vegas.

    Hon’s life was also enriched by the joy of family milestones. He celebrated the marriage of his son Gary to Alisa Nguyen (Roberts) in 2019, a union that blessed him with two grandsons, Weston Van Nguyen and Ethan Joseph Nguyen, who captured his heart. In a touching moment, he had the honor of walking his daughter, Brianna Anderson (Nguyen), down the aisle to her husband, Drazen Anderson, in May 2022. These cherished family moments encapsulated the love and pride that defined Hon's legacy.

    Hon's Legacy

    Hon is survived by his wife, Niem Lam; his son, Gary Nguyen; his daughter, Brianna Anderson (Nguyen); his grandsons, Weston and Ethan; one surviving sister, Gái Thị Nguyen; and one surviving brother, Thương Văn Nguyen, both residing in Vietnam. He will be remembered not just as a devoted husband and father but also as an adoring grandfather who brought warmth and joy into the lives of those around him.

    The wisdom Hon imparted throughout his life will continue to inspire his family and friends; they will carry forward the meaningful lessons he shared. He will be deeply missed by family and friends, as well as anyone fortunate enough to have crossed paths with him. 

A memorial service to honor Hon Van Nguyen will take place on January 11th, 2025, from 1 pm to 3 pm at Kraft-Sussman Funeral Home, located at 3975 South Durango Dr., Las Vegas, NV 89147. 

In the collective memories of those who loved him, Hon's spirit will endure, echoing the kindness, dedication, and quiet strength that characterized his remarkable life.
