Leon Lieberman was born on October 3rd, 1936, in Jamaica, New York to parents Martin A. and Lillian Lieberman.

He graduated from Jamaica High School in 1954.  He received his B.S degree in Education from SUNY Oswego in 1960, his M.S degree in Industrial Education from CCNY, and a second M.S degree in Liberal Studies from SUNY Stony Brook in 1968.

Leon taught Industrial Arts at Elwood Public School from 1961-1972, where he helped organize and lead The Elwood Federation of Teachers.  He joined the staff of the New York State United Teachers (NYSUT) as a field representative on Long Island in 1972 and was promoted to Regional Staff Director for NYSUT’s capital district in 1976.  He was then promoted to assistant to NYSUT’s president in 1992, where he served until retiring in 1999.

After retiring from NYSUT, Leon worked assisting his wife, Sarah, in maintaining their horse farm, Round View, in Porters Corners, New York.  The farm became a sanctuary for retired Thoroughbred horses, to which Sarah and Leon had wonderful and unending devotion.  He enjoyed a permanent and unending love affair with Sarah, his forever love.

Leon is survived by his loving wife, Sarah Lieberman and his children, Marta Rubin (Mark) and Robert Lieberman (Katie).  He also leaves behind four grandchildren, Danielle (Ryan), Michael (Emily), James, and Shannon and three great grandchildren, Zoe, Ambrose John, and Tatum and niece, Marilyn, and nephews Howard and David. He was predeceased by his brother Barry Lieberman (Kay) and sisters, Lorraine Foner (Henry), and Elaine Seiff (Saul) and nieces Diane, Rachel, Francine, and Andrea.

In keeping with Leon’s wishes, no formal services will be held. Memorial donations in Leon’s name can be made to the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation, 112 Spring Street, Saratoga Springs, NY, 12866 or to the Parkinson’s Foundation.
