Sylvia Housend Smith, 89, of Greensboro, N.C., died December 29, 2024, at Beacon Place Hospice House in Greensboro, N.C.
Sylvia was born in Telfair County on December 21, 1937. She was the daughter of the late Benjamin Johnson “BJ” Housend and Etta Mae Padgett Housend of McRae, Ga.
Sylvia graduated in 1956 from McRae-Helena High School where she earned the honor of Salutatorian. Sylvia played basketball with the McRae-Helena Blue Devil basketball team under the direction of the late Laurence Mountjoy. After high school, Sylvia attended the University of Georgia in Athens.
Sylvia married Gerald S. Smith Sr. of Perry on August 19, 1957. After moving to Greensboro, Sylvia was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church. Her greatest passions in life were for her home, family, love of gardening and her many family pets.
Sylvia was preceded in death by her son Gerald Spencer Smith Jr. of Greensboro, N.C. and brother William Thomas “Bill” Housend of McRae, Ga.
Survivors include her husband Gerald S. Smith and daughter Lisa Anne Smith of Greensboro, N.C. and one sister, Mary Ann Hawkins of St. Simons Island, Ga. Other survivors include five nieces and one nephew and many cousins and great nieces and nephews. She will be greatly missed.
There will be a private graveside service at Westminster Gardens in Greensboro, N.C.
