It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Elizabeth Gunnin Cain, who died peacefully on December 20, 2024, at the age of 85, in Charleston, South Carolina. A beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, Elizabeth was a woman of grace, intelligence, and quiet confidence.

Born on February 28, 1939, in Atlanta, Georgia, Elizabeth was the daughter of the late Sarah Ramelle and Robert Lee Gunnin. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Walter D. Cain Jr., and her oldest son, Gregory David Cain.

Elizabeth leaves behind her middle son, Jeffery Lee Cain (Kate), and her daughter, Darlyne Elizabeth Cain. She is also survived by her daughter-in-law, Anja, and her cherished grandchildren: Paul, Henry, Juliette, Julius, and Julian.

1961 was a big year for Elizabeth - she graduated from Baylor University with a BA in Music Education, and wed Walter on July 8, 1961.

Elizabeth had a long and fulfilling career as a grade school music teacher in the Kershaw County, South Carolina school system, where she touched the lives of countless students. She was also an accomplished organist, playing at both First Baptist Church as the original organist in the 1960's, and with Littleton Street United Methodist Church in Camden, SC, where her music and spirit uplifted the congregation for many years.

An avid reader and lover of puzzles, Elizabeth found joy in life's simple pleasures. One of her most treasured hobbies was collecting shark’s teeth on beaches around the world—a pursuit she became particularly skilled at and enjoyed sharing with family and friends. Her ability to find these small treasures in the sand was a testament to her patience, persistence, and keen eye for beauty in the world.

Elizabeth’s warm heart, boundless kindness, and soft manner will be missed by all who knew her. She was a loving and devoted mother and grandmother, and her legacy will live on in the many lives she touched through her music, her teaching, and her family.

A private memorial service celebrating Elizabeth’s life will be held at a future date. Those who wish to honor her memory may consider a donation to the First Baptist Church of Camden Choir Fund, 1201 Broad Street, Camden, SC 29020.

May Elizabeth rest in peace, knowing she leaves behind a legacy of love, music, and a life well-lived.
