Major Lloyd Allan West
October 29th, 1942 - January 11th, 2025
Lloyd was born in Glen Cove New York on October 29, 1942 to George and Madeline West. Lloyd was the older brother to his loving sister Karen. Lloyd grew up in Bayville, NY, graduating from Oyster Bay High School in 1960. He earned a Bachelor of Science from SUNY Albany in 1964 and an MBA from the University of Denver in 1966, where he met and married his wife, Melissa on March 25, 1967.
Lloyd joined the Air Force shortly after graduation, serving 22 years and retiring as a Major in 1987. Lloyd flew the C-123 in Vietnam, spraying Agent Orange while in Bien Hoa and Da Nang. Followed by F-101s, F-111s, and F-15s, including his roles as the AMRAAM Test Force Director and a member of the 6586 Test Squadron. His service awarded him 13 Air Force and 2 Foreign Decorations including; 3 Distinguished Flying Crosses, a Meritorious Service Medal, 30 Air Medals, and Vietnam Gallantry Cross.
After his military career, Lloyd and Melissa purchased Plan-It Travel/Travel Leaders in Lynnwood, WA, expanding the travel agency to Marysville. He later became a product manager for Trams/Sabre, spending eight years working in Los Angeles during the week while returning home on weekends.
Lloyd’s greatest passions in life were his family, photography, and exploring the world. He found joy in experiencing new cultures and places, often sharing those moments with the people he loved. Lloyd’s adventures took him across all seven continents and nearly 200 countries. Some of his most treasured travel memories include walking among the penguins of Antarctica and on the Great Wall of China. Exploring the movie set of Hobbiton and the breath taking Grand Canyon. Experiencing unforgettable African safaris and the especially the meaningful journeys of returning to China Beach Vietnam as well as seeing where his father, George, flew missions in the So. Pacific during WWII.
Family was at the heart of Lloyd’s life. He has two daughters, Laura and Erica that he took immense pride in celebrating their college graduations, marriages, and life accomplishments.
Lloyd is survived by his loving wife, Melissa, and daughters Laura (Robert) and Erica (Robin). He was a proud grandfather to Shawnta, Alexis (Scott), and Zachery (Emily Ann), and a beloved great-grandfather to Keaton, Parker, Kennedy, Kayden, Payton, Percy, and Aurora.
Lloyd’s true legacy lies not in the places he visited but in his family and the lives he touched with his kindness, integrity, and thoughtfulness. He embodied the spirit of an Officer and a Gentleman, leaving behind a life well-lived and deeply cherished.
A Viewing will be held 10:00 - 11:00 AM, with a Funeral Service from 11:00 - 11:30 AM, on January 23, 2025 at Regency Mortuary, 9850 West Thunderbird Boulevard, Sun City, Arizona. Leaving Regency Mortuary at 12:15 PM, a Military Honors and Graveside Service will be held at 1:00 PM on January 23, 2025 at National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona, 2929 East Pinnacle Peak Road, Phoenix, Arizona. A Reception will follow from 2:30 - 4:30 PM at All Saints of the Desert Episcopal Church, 9502 West Hutton Drive, Sun City, Arizona.
In lieu of flowers, Lloyd would appreciate donations be sent to either Alzheimer’s Association (alz.org) or Wounded Warrior Project (.org) in honor of him.
