Buford "Jerry" Gerald Knight
January 23rd, 1936 - January 3rd, 2025
Buford Gerald “Jerry” Knight, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on January 3, 2025, at the age of 88.
Born on January 23, 1936, in Alexandria, Louisiana, Jerry was the son of Buford Calvin and Kathryn Knight. He grew up with his brother, Al Knight (who passed away in 2010), and sister, Sylvia Knight (who passed away in 2023).
Jerry graduated from Central High School in Jackson, Mississippi, in 1954. He went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Aeronautical Engineering from Mississippi State College in 1958, paving the way for a remarkable career in the aerospace industry.
In 1960, Jerry met the love of his life, Roberta “Bobby” Bailey. The two were married in 1962, sharing 62 wonderful years of love, laughter, and cherished memories.
Jerry’s professional journey began at Boeing in 1958, where he dedicated 38 years of service. He played a pivotal role as an engineer, contributing to the Minuteman Missile Defense System and later to the AWACS Air Defense Systems. In addition to his civilian career, Jerry proudly served in the Army Reserves, exemplifying his deep commitment to his profession and his country.
Together, Jerry and Bobby raised two sons, Doug and Bryan (who passed away in 2010). Jerry was a devoted father who worked tirelessly to provide a loving home and instill a strong work ethic in his children. He adored his granddaughter, Amber Kelley, and took great pride in his extended family through Doug’s partner, Janice Shull. This family includes four step-grandchildren—Lou Cysewski, Jacob Elliot, Paige Tobben, and Tessa Faddis—and six great-step-grandchildren.
Jerry’s life was marked by boundless curiosity and a talent for solving problems. As a rocket scientist, he could find a solution to any challenge. He relished raising his boys, attending their activities, and, later, spending time boating with Bobby. An avid golfer and bicyclist, Jerry embraced hobbies that kept him active and full of zest for life.
In retirement, Jerry devoted himself to serving others, particularly through his cherished church, St. James Episcopal in Kent, Washington. As Senior Warden on the Vestry, he earned the affectionate title “Mr. Fixit,” known for his ability to tackle any problem with a smile and a helping hand. His warmth, generosity, and ever-present grace endeared him to the congregation and all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
Jerry will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all whose lives he touched. His legacy of love, hard work, and service will remain an enduring inspiration to those he leaves behind.
A celebration of Jerry’s life will be held at St. James Episcopal Church in Kent on January 24th at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to St. James Episcopal Church, PO Box 5517, Kent, WA 98064 to honor Jerry’s lifelong commitment to helping others.
