Douglas "Doug" Lynn Steinmetz
November 4th, 1950 - January 10th, 2025
Douglas Steinmetz, 74, passed away at his home surrounded by his family, and was made new on January 10, 2025 after a courageous battle with ALS.
Doug was born in Mahnomen, Minnesota, on November 4, 1950. Raised on a small dairy farm, he learned the value of hard work, grit and perseverance at an early age. Doug liked to play sports and was a gifted and natural athlete.
After high school, Doug attended North Dakota State College, where he met his wife, Barbara Simon. Barb and Doug married shortly thereafter and moved to Grand Forks, North Dakota, where they managed an apartment complex, and their daughter Jill was born. They moved to Maddock, North Dakota, to be closer to family. There they managed B&D Lanes and Cafe, and their son Matthew was born.
In 1980, Doug and Barb moved to Wheatland, Wyoming, where he worked at Basin Electric for 26 years. Doug loved to be a cowboy, working with his friends who ranched outside of Wheatland. He took his kids and two horses to the Twin Pine Ranch on weekends to help move cattle, brand and guide hunters for the fun of it. This kind of work filled his soul. Doug’s true passion was fishing, especially if he could share that time with friends and family reeling in large walleyes.
Doug and Barb retired in Garrison, North Dakota in 2006 to be closer to family, and to enjoy the outdoors. When not fishing, Doug was volunteering with the Garrison Fire Department, Saint Paul Lutheran Church, the golf course, and local airport. He loved helping his brother-in-law, Randy plant and harvest crops to fill his hard-working soul. Doug was a very selfless and humble man who gave his time and talents to serve others. He truly loved the brotherhood that he shared with his fellow firefighters and fishing buddies. Doug loved God and his family, and cherished his abilities to be active.
Doug was preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Bea, brother Kenny (Kathy), sister Karen (Gary) Bergerson, and brother-in-law Curt Moen. He is survived by his wife of 53 years Barb, his children, Jill and Matt (Amber), his beloved and cherished grandson, Bodhi, and sisters, Carol (Curt) Moen, Sandy (Gregg) Friehe, and Nancy (Dave) Eid. Doug is also survived by many extended family, whom he was able to see and spend time with at a large Simon family gathering in June 2024.
Doug was ready to be free, and to walk with his Savior. He will be truly missed, but his love, passions and virtues will live on through his friends and family.
A celebration of life will be held in Garrison this summer.
