Jan O’Donnell died peacefully on January 14th in Woodburn, Oregon at the age of 73.
She was born in Portland, and raised in West Linn. She had an affinity for animals from a young age—riding horses, and helping her mom train show dogs.
During her childhood, Jan enjoyed camping with her family on expeditions led by her father, an amateur archaeologist.
For decades, she worked at the Army Corp of Engineers. She was a pioneering female radio operator and admin clerk that lived on the dredge boat Essayons, travelling with the ship as far as Alaska and Hawaii.
After a long career, Jan retired in Woodburn. She was an avid reader, and enjoyed crafts and quilting, painting, and gardening. She was an active volunteer for local libraries.
Throughout her life, Jan worked with animal rescue organizations, and fostered many birds and small dogs. She especially loved Chihuahuas and Pomeranians.
Her beloved rescue dog, Sasha, was a joy until the end—and is now happily rehomed with a family in Portland.
Jan had a mischievous sense of humor, and quietly appreciated the kindness that people extended to her.
She is survived by brothers Pat and Jim, daughter Madeline, and grandchildren Olivia and Nathan.
No services were requested. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Exotic Bird Rescue Oregon or to the Oregon Humane Society.
