Betty Wheeler Plum, a cherished matriarch, a source of unwavering spiritual strength, and a welcoming presence to all, passed away peacefully on January 13, 2025, surrounded by the love of her children. Known for her kindness, grace, and boundless generosity, Betty's presence illuminated the lives of everyone fortunate enough to know her.
She leaves behind a legacy of love through her three children: Gary W. Plum (Laura) of Palmetto, FL; Kurt R. Plum (Michael) of Tampa, FL; and Leanne Plum Mann (Marshall) of Rome, GA. Betty was a devoted grandmother to five grandchildren and great-grandmother to four great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind countless nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family who were touched by her warm spirit. She was preceded in death by her parents, Mark Kendrick Wheeler and Ethel Haman Wheeler, her siblings Warren S. Wheeler, Earl F. Wheeler, Mark K. Wheeler, Inez W. Klein, and her beloved husband, Frederick Carl Plum, who passed away on May 29, 2003.
Betty's home was more than a place—it was a sanctuary where anyone in need of comfort, fellowship, or a moment of peace was welcomed with open arms. Her gatherings, whether for a prayer group, Sunday school, or a casual coffee morning, were legendary for their warmth, laughter, and sense of belonging.
A lifelong resident of Palmetto, FL, Betty was delivered by Dr Blake at Bradenton General Hospital on August 9, 1931. She attended Frankie Howze Elementary, graduated from Manatee County High School, and later pursued studies at Albion College in Michigan and nursing school at Crawford-Long in Atlanta, GA. Betty’s career as a surgical assistant at Manatee Memorial Hospital reflected her deep compassion and commitment to serving others.
Betty and her husband Fred shared a passion for travel, owning several travel agencies along Florida's Gulf Coast. Their adventures took them around the globe, from road trips across Montana to exploring the Holy Land, which held a special place in Betty's heart.
An artist at heart, Betty began working with stained glass at the age of 50 and created exquisite pieces that adorned homes, churches, and communities across Florida, Georgia, and Montana. Her works include restorations at Bradenton First Baptist Church and original creations for Church on the Rock, founded in her living room.
Betty’s contributions to her community extended beyond her artistry. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Palmetto and actively involved in Entre’ Nous, Youth for Christ, and the Service Club of Manatee County. She was a gracious host, welcoming family, friends, and even international dignitaries into her home.
Above all, Betty’s greatest joy and pride were her children, whom she raised with unwavering love and dedication. She instilled in them the values of kindness, faith, and a commitment to bettering their communities—a legacy that continues through them.
In lieu of flowers, the family invites donations to Southeastern Guide Dogs at www.guidedogs.org in Betty's memory, honoring her spirit of care and generosity.
Betty Wheeler Plum will forever be remembered for her radiant spirit, her heart for others, and the countless lives she touched. She will be deeply missed but celebrated in every memory and story she leaves behind.
