Cynthia Lee Ragland
February 9th, 1954 - January 15th, 2025
Cynthia Lee Ragland, age 70, passed away peacefully at her home in Albuquerque, New Mexico, on January 15th, 2025 in the company of her loving husband, Pat.
Cindy was born February 9th, 1954 in Oregon City, Oregon, the daughter of James and Mary (Garrity) Ragland.
She received her bachelors and masters degrees from Portland State University and her Ph.D. in English from the University of Washington in 1991. Cindy met her future husband, Patrick, in 1992 when they were both working at the Center for Talented Youth of Johns Hopkins University. She was an English professor at the University of Wisconsin – Oshkosh from 1992 to 1997. Cindy and Patrick were married on April 25, 1997 in Wisconsin. They lived in Massachusetts for 10 years, where she taught at the University of Connecticut. In 2007 they moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico, where she taught for a brief time at the University of New Mexico.
Cindy was a passionate gardener who grew plants and flowers universally acclaimed for their extravagant beauty. She also was an avid reader and cherished the companionship of her friends in 3 book clubs. She was known for her ability to help her friends by providing advice that was both sage and compassionate. She will be especially remembered for her thoughtful generosity.
Remaining to cherish Cindy’s memory are her husband, Patrick Carey; step-daughter Katie Carey and husband, Mike Wolk; step-daughter Becky Fagan and husband, Matt, and grandchildren, Maya, Josephine, James, and Juliette. She is also survived by her sister, Betsy Ragland; brother, Todd Ragland and wife, Satoko; brother, Christopher Ragland and partner, Karen; cousin, Holly Nelson; brother-in-law, Dee Johnson, and her nieces and nephews. Preceding Cindy in death are her parents, James and Mary Ragland and sister, Vicki Johnson.
