I want to go and do!
Dixie Lee (Stockton) Fleeger lived a full life of family, friends, and service at her church. Dixie was born on November 13, 1929 in Soldier Summit, Utah, a company town for the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad, where her father worked as a boilermaker. The family moved to Helper, Utah when she was very young.
Dixie had two older brothers, Bill and Norman Stockton. Her mother was Nordelle May Jones. Her father was Harry Y Stockton.
In her youth, Dixie was an avid and flexible dancer. She rode the train to Salt Lake City each week with her brother for dance lessons. She also loved swimming and playing games with friends.
Dixie’s parents divorced when she was 13 after which she and her brothers helped her mother manage and run a boarding house. Bill, Norman, and Dixie changed sheets, made beds, filled up the coal bins, and washed lots of dishes.
At age 18 Dixie attended school in Oakland, California to become a dental technician, staying at the same boarding house as her older brother, Bill. One day she saw Bill coming downstairs to breakfast with a new friend, John Fleeger. Dixie fell in love at first sight and knew John was the man for her. After some courtship, John and Dixie drove to Reno, Nevada, to be married June 5, 1948.
Dixie and John grew their family in Burney, California and Medford, Oregon, eventually settling into a beautiful 1908 farmhouse on the west side of Medford, Oregon. John, who passed away in 1996, was a forester in the timber industry in Southern Oregon while Dixie tended to their home and raised five children: Linda Fleeger Heinsohn, Peggy (Margaret) Fleeger Trout, John Fleeger Jr, Ginny (Virginia) Fleeger, Bill (William) Fleeger. Her son, John Fleeger Jr preceded her in death. In addition to four of her children, she is survived by 12 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Dixie was active in The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints where she offered decades of service and cultivated lifelong friends. Dixie will be remembered for her love of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She loved attending church and serving in church callings, She had many friends who loved her and enjoyed her company. A graveside memorial service for family and friends will be held Friday, February 14, 2025, 1:00PM, at the shelter at Eagle Point National Cemetery.
