Ernie, as he was known to family and friends, was born on August 25, 1946 in Plattsburgh, NY to the late Gus and Maria (Larios) Niforos. He served three years in the United States Navy on board the destroyer USS Basilone. After his time in the Navy, he returned to finish his degree in History at SUNY Plattsburgh where he met and rekindled a romance with his future wife Marguerite (Sorensen) Niforos.
Moving to Johnstown in 1981, Ernie co-owned and operated New York Lunch in downtown Gloversville for many years. He then returned to school to get a degree in Hotel and Restaurant Management from Schenectady County Community College, after which he was employed as chef at the Desmond in Albany. In 1993, he purchased Tegeo’s Luncheonette in Gloversville and operated that until his retirement in 2006.
In retirement, Ernie found a passion for woodworking; making furniture for his children and his many nieces and nephews. Ernie also enjoyed traveling the world with his wife Peggy and their children. During their retirement, they were able to visit more than 75 countries on 6 continents. In recent years, he relished spending time with his grandson Teddy; reading, playing games and listening to vinyl.
Ernie was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Johnstown where he was always found in the front pew. He was also a 38-year member and past president of Pleasant Square Fire Company and a past president of the Gloversville Lions Club.
