Michael Lee Spandel

June 19, 1968 – January 16, 2025

It is with shattered hearts that we share the loss of Michael Lee Spandel, who passed away peacefully on January 16, 2025, after a brief illness. Michael was 56 years old and brought immeasurable love, light, and joy to the lives of all who knew him.

To know Michael was to know pure kindness and unconditional love. His warm hugs, radiant smile, and infectious laughter were gifts he shared freely, and his presence made the world a brighter place. Though our time with Michael feels far too short, we are forever grateful for the memories, laughter, and profound lessons he gave us.

Michael touched lives in a way few can. As someone with Down syndrome, he brought a unique and beautiful perspective to the world, inspiring conversations about inclusion, accessibility, and acceptance. Growing up in the 1970s and 1980s, Michael’s life and contributions helped foster positive societal changes, breaking barriers and building understanding.

He inspired those around him to be better—kinder, more patient, and more accepting of others. His influence on our families, friendships, and communities is immeasurable, and we are deeply proud of the love and unity he brought to those fortunate enough to know him.

A devoted fan of the Seahawks and Mariners, Michael never missed an opportunity to cheer for his favorite teams, always bringing his trademark enthusiasm to every game.

Michael is survived by his loving parents, Ellen Spandel and George Spandel (Diana); his devoted sister, Michelle Thompson; and his cherished nephews, Joshua and Taylor Thompson. He is also deeply missed by his Aunt Mary Johnson, Aunt and Uncle Steve and Judy Spandel, and cousins Jody Devereaux, Gus Johnson, Melissa Christian, Daphne Paulk, Eddy Jr. Spandel, and Scott Spandel.

Mike is also deeply loved by his caregivers who became his chosen family. Caring for Mike lovingly 24/7 in the home his mother purchased for him, are Jasmine, Britney, Laura, Vaituutuulima, Diana, Richard, Charles, Freddy and Tulipe who worked for Hope and Family Services. He is also deeply loved by the Ron and Rae Lea Newman family who provided care for Mike both inside their home and as co-guardians with Ellen. Remington, Rachel, Ronda, Raymond and Raina’s lives will be forever blessed by their memories of living for a time with Michael and visiting him often.

Troy Leonard was Mike’s roommate for over six years and together they enjoyed a peaceful, pleasant home. They very much enjoyed living together with their staff.

Please join us in celebrating Michael’s incredible life and the legacy of love and joy he leaves behind.

Michael, you were truly one of a kind, and we will miss you more than words can ever express. Rest peacefully, knowing you were, and always will be, deeply loved.
