Sandy Carol (Key) Lester, 66, of Lawrenceburg, Kentucky, passed away at the Frankfort Regional Medical Center on January 24, 2025, after a five-year battle with breast cancer.

She was born in Louisville, Kentucky, on February 5, 1958, to Wildon (Bill) Key and Dolores Cantrell Key, both deceased.  She also was preceded in death by her grandparents Sellie Key, Webbie Guthrie Key, and Estelle Mokley Keith; and brother-in-law Lucky King.

She is survived by her loving husband of 39 years, Danny Lester; children Quentin Key Lester and Leslie Jeanine (Lester) Wegner (Jamie); grandchildren Aubrey Wegner and Avery Wegner; sister Terry Cantrell King and brother Mark Key (Jennifer); aunt Becky Key Rush; cousins Patricia Hood Brown and Carole Cantrell Miller; nieces and nephews, Kenny Flood, Nicholas Flood, Josh King, Justin King, Jason Key, Jennifer Key, and Jordan Vohel; as well as several great nieces and nephews.

Sandy was a 1976 graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School.  A dedicated employee, she began as a temporary worker with BCBS in the mail room, and following many corporate name and title changes, she retired after 40 years of service from Elevance-Anthem as an Implementation Coordinator.

Sandy had a quick, sarcastic sense of humor, which she inherited from her mother, shared with her sister, and passed to her son.  She enjoyed traveling, drive-abouts, and attending concerts with her husband.  A loving mother, if her children were her pride, her grandchildren were her joy, and she relished the summers she spent with them.  She was so proud of all their accomplishments.  Sandy was intelligent, hardworking, witty, and unflappable.  She battled cancer like she did everything else, head-on with a positive attitude and sense of humor, with Danny by her side as the love of her life. Although her brain and will to fight never slowed, her body just could not keep up.  A special thank you to Dr. Myhan and his team for their excellent care through her cancer journey.

From an early age, Sandy always said she did not want anyone looking at her after she passed, and that she would “rather they put on some Willie (Nelson) and have a beer.”  So, please, give her a toast when you get the chance.  She deserves it.  As per her wishes, Sandy's ashes will be forever married with Danny's upon his passing, to be scattered at their children's discretion.

A private Celebration of her Life will be held at a later date.  She was well loved and will be missed by many. In lieu of flowers or cards, please consider making an online Memorial Donation in Sandy’s name to Breast Cancer Research Foundation, www.bcrf.org
