In Loving Memory

Joy Basinet Alford, 69, of Lexington, SC (formally Sumter, SC), passed away on January 22, 2025. She was born on February 22, 1955, in Bitburg, Germany, to Ruth (Card) Basinet and David J. Basinet.

She is survived by her daughters, Dr. Heather Hoyt (Les) of Irmo and Jana McMichael (Jeff) of Lexington; five sisters, Lynne Basinet, Diane Basinet, Theresa Morris, Donna Tillery, and Jana Basinet; and her grandchildren, Gage McMichael, Rachel Hoyt, Dylan McMichael, Noa Grey McMichael, and a great-grandson Blaiz McMichael. She was preceded in death by her prior husband, Cecil “Greg” Alford, her mother and father, and a sister, Ann Schiffbauer.

Joy was a loving mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. She spent most of her life in Sumter as her father, Lt. Col. Basinet, was stationed at Shaw Air Force Base as a fighter pilot until his retirement. Joy attended Sumter High School and Central Carolina Technical College, where she obtained an AA in Business. Interestingly, she graduated from CCTC the same day as her daughter, Heather (Business), and her prior husband, Greg (RN), in 1996.

Joy dedicated her life to supporting others in their sobriety. She was known for her sweet disposition and laughter, and she touched the lives of many as an AA sponsor for many years.

A memorial will be held on Saturday, February 1st, at 2:00 pm at The City Center (next to the opera house), 25 Main Street, Sumter, SC, to celebrate Joy’s life. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that any donations in her name be made to the Alzheimer’s Association at https://act.alz.org/ so that continued research can be funded to put an end to this terrible disease.

Joy will be missed by all who knew her. Her loss is deeply felt, and her memory will live on in the hearts of her family and friends forever. Joy is free from the body which held her captive, and she is now rejoicing in the arms of Jesus. This brings us all comfort.
