“Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.”

Patricia "Pat" Jarrell Stokes, age 90, passed away on January 22, 2025. She was born in Charlotte, NC, on July 16, 1934, the youngest of ten children to the late Charlie Swan and Annabelle Helms Jarrell.

Pat graduated from Central High School in 1952 and later earned her degree from the Women's College, the University of North Carolina, now known as UNC-G. After graduation, she dedicated herself to social work within the Charlotte Mecklenburg area.

On December 1, 1956, Pat married the love of her life, H. Von Stokes, at Dilworth United Methodist Church. Pat balanced her career with raising her children, continuing to work with Social Services until the birth of her third child.

Pat lived by the Golden Rule: “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” A lifelong member of Dilworth United Methodist Church, she served the church community in various capacities, including volunteering with The Women’s Circle, children’s ministries, Sunday School teaching, and wherever she was needed.

Pat is predeceased by her husband, H. Von Stokes, and her siblings: Rose Matilda Beasley, Richard Kennedy Jarrell, William Garland Jarrell, Ruth Shirley Jarrell, Dorothy Leona Draughon, Annabelle Jarrell, Charlie Walker Jarrell, Mary Jane Wells, and Henry Jackson Jarrell.

She is survived by her children: Susan Gardiner (Keith), Sharon Stokes-Woodard (Joseph), Shannon Wynne (Charlie), and Von J. Stokes (Mary). Her grandchildren include Charles Gardiner, Jordan Gardiner (Jennifer), Ethan Wynne, Harrison Wynne (Morgan), Preston Stokes, and Wesley Stokes. Pat was also blessed with great-grandchildren: Annabelle Gardiner (daughter of Charles), Aiden Gardiner and Elliott Gardiner (sons of Jordan and Jennifer).

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, February 1, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. at Dilworth United Methodist Church, Charlotte, NC. Arrangements are in the care of Hankins & Whittington Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Levine & Dickson Hospice House at Aldersgate, Charlotte, NC, or Dilworth United Methodist Church.

Our services are crafted to honor your loved ones in ways that are both deeply meaningful and healing. Our rich history began in 1946 when Irvin W. Hankins and James B. Whittington took the reins of the Crouch Funeral Home. The growth of our service and the community's support led to our move in March 1963 to the current location—once St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, built in 1930. Our chapel, a cherished historic landmark within the storied Dilworth neighborhood, is renowned for being the only funeral home in Charlotte graced with its own chapel, echoing with decades of history and serenity....
