Bernita Mae (Nolt) Holsteen, 97, of Colorado Springs, CO, passed away peacefully on Monday, January 20, 2025, finishing her calling and going home.

She was born in Chicago, IL in 1928 to Walter and Vivian (Richter) Nolt, and was raised in Billings, MT. Bernie attended Billings High School, graduating class of 1946. She went on to study nursing at a joint Wheaton College / West Suburban Hospital program and became a Registered Nurse.

While at Wheaton, Bernie met and fell in love with Verdaine Holsteen of Yarmouth, IA They were married in June, 1950. Their life together lasted a wonderful sixty-three years, graced seven different states, blessed eight churches, produced four adult children, fourteen grandchildren, seventeen great-grandchildren, shared church life with hundreds, and taught the gospel of Jesus Christ to thousands.

Bernie was devoted to her family and though she chose to delay a career so she could raise her children, she worked in a number of hospitals as an RN. That did not stop her from expressing her creative spirit, however. Bernie became an accomplished seamstress and artist. She also managed to find time to feed a life-long habit of reading--an affliction she passed on to all her children. Music was another of her passions. Whether singing in the church choir or listening to a live performance of “The Messiah,” she loved it. She also loved sharing life with friends. “Once a friend, always a friend” describes her for she maintained friendships for decades across hundreds or thousands of miles. Bernie was, above all, devoted to her family and to her Lord. Her gentle spirit, sense of humor, and loving attitude were evident for all to see.

Bernie was preceded in death by her husband, Verd, and is survived by her sons Daniel (Robin), David (Susan), Nathan (Janice), daughter Nayda Voss (Charles), fourteen grandchildren, and seventeen great-grandchildren.

A memorial service is scheduled for 10:00 AM, February 15, 2025, at Faith Evangelical Free Church (FEFC), 6065 Oakwood Blvd, Colorado Springs, CO 80923. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Bernie’s memory to FEFC.
