Despite the challenges he faced in his final years, those who knew Kip Halcomb would always describe him as a kind man. A devoted father, husband, brother, and friend, Kip’s legacy is one of selflessness, strength, and love for his family.

Kip was born on August 10, 1958, in Havre, Montana, and grew up in Cut Bank. Kip spent a lot of time outdoors on Cut Bank Creek and the mountains and rivers of Glacier National Park. This inspired a love of camping and fishing he enjoyed with family and friends. He was a young man full of ambition, and after high school, he proudly enlisted in the Navy. Serving aboard the USS John Young, Kip’s journey took him across the world. From the Far East of the Philippines, Mindoro Island, Okinawa, and the South China Sea, Kip’s service extended well beyond his military duties.

One of the defining moments of Kip’s naval career came when the ship’s crew responded to a distress call from small boats carrying refugees. In a heroic act of humanity, Kip and his fellow sailors rescued 308 Vietnamese refugees, earning the Humanitarian Service Medal for their bravery. That act of kindness was just one example of Kip’s lifelong commitment to helping others, a trait that would shape his entire life.

After being honorably discharged from the Navy, Kip remained in Southern California, where he met and married his beloved wife, Susan. Together, they raised a family and moved across the country—first to Washington, then to Northern California, and back to Southern California. No matter where he lived, Kip remained a devoted San Diego Chargers fan.

Family meant the world to Kip, and his love for them was unwavering. After retirement, Kip moved back to Washington to be closer to family. Kip’s kindness and selflessness weren’t limited to his family. His friends, neighbors, and anyone who crossed his path knew that Kip was the type of man who would put others before himself.

Kip’s passing leaves a void that can never be filled, but we find comfort in knowing that he is now at peace, free from pain. His family and friends hold tight to the countless memories of his love, generosity, and laughter. He was preceded in death by his wife, Susan, his son Abraham, his parents Bill and Nadine, and his sister Tammy. He is survived by his sons, Kip Jr., Kyle, and Dylan, brother Bill (Mona), extended family in Utah, several cousins, nieces and nephews, great nieces and great nephews, and many friends. While we will miss him dearly, we are eternally grateful for the time we had with him.

Kip’s legacy will live on in the lives he touched, and his memory will continue to inspire all of us who knew him. He was a man who gave so much, not just to his family but to everyone around him. His life was a testament to the power of kindness, service, and unwavering love.

Rest in peace, Kip. You will always be in our hearts.
