Bernice Lewandowski passed away peacefully on January 23, 2025, in Vienna, VA, at the age of 99. Born on August 22, 1925, in Baltimore, MD, she was the cherished daughter of Polish immigrants, Felix Lewandowski and Waleria Puk, who instilled in her a deep appreciation for her Polish heritage and unwavering Catholic faith.Bernice was a proud graduate of The Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore, where she graduated with her 4 degree, reflecting her exceptional talent and dedication to music. Her passion for the violin led her to perform with The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, where she proudly sat behind the Concert Master. Unfortunately, her career as a violinist was cut short due to health reasons, yet her love for music remained ever-present throughout her life.In addition to her musical accomplishments, Bernice enjoyed a prolific career as a newspaper reporter, contributing her keen insights and linguistic prowess to two Polish newspapers in Baltimore and Chicago, as well as an English publication. Her remarkable linguistic skills were not confined to journalism; she was a gifted polyglot, fluent in English, Polish, French, German, and Vietnamese.During her extensive career with The Department of Army, Bernice served as a civilian with distinction for over four decades, including during the critical periods of World War II and the Vietnam War. Her role as a linguist facilitated her travels and assignments overseas, enriching her life with diverse experiences and friendships.Bernice’s personal life was marked by her marriages, first to Mr. Milan Jan Halla from Czechoslovakia, which ended in annulment, and later to Count Sdzislaw Milobedski from Poland, with whom she shared many cherished years before being widowed.A vibrant member of her community, she resided in several locations, including Baltimore, MD; Washington, DC; and Arlington, VA. She was a beloved parishioner of St. Agnes Catholic Church in Arlington, VA.She leaves behind two nephews, Phillip Lewandowski, who resides in Delaware and Andrzej Gawlick of the DC Metro. Her surviving family, as well as the many friends she made throughout her lifetime, remembers her as a devoted, spirited individual whose legacy of resilience, faith, and intellect continues to inspire. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the music programs at The Peabody Conservatory, a place that nurtured Bernice’s early dreams and talents.A Mass of Christian Burial to celebrate Bernice's extraordinary life will be celebrated at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Arlington, VA. She will be buried next to her husband at Our Lady of Czestochowa Cemetery in Doylestown, PA. The family appreciates your thoughts, prayers, and support at this time.
