Donald Edward Shallenberg

July 4th, 1937 - January 26th, 2025

Donald Shallenberg, 87, of Fort Collins, CO passed peacefully into the arms of our Lord on Sunday morning, January 26, 2025. Born to Emil (Mike) Shallenberg and Margaret Shallenberg, Don was raised on Grafton, NE. He grew up in the small Grafton community surrounded by many great friends who cared for Don and took an active role in his youth after the loss of his father at an early age. He developed a love for the outdoors and shared stories about fishing and hunting from his childhood, all experiences gained from those who surrounded and cared for Don in his youth. Upon graduation from Grafton High School, Don enlisted in the U.S. Navy. After completing boot camp at The Naval Station Great Lakes, he served aboard the U.S.S. Yorktown C-10 Aircraft Carrier, the “Fighting Lady” as an IC Electrician before returning to Grafton after his separation from the naval service with honor. Don began work for the public utility company, Kansas Nebraska Power upon his return home. It was after his return that a beautiful new teacher who had moved to Grafton to teach 2nd and 3rd grade elementary classes caught his eye. Her name was MaryAnn Vagts. They were married in August of 1960. Theirs was an active household with three sons born between 1963 and 1970. Don continued to advance his career working for the public gas utility companies that continued to change over the years and moved the family to various Nebraska locations including Aurora, Plattsmouth, Columbus, Norfolk, and Lincoln. He was proud of his sons, all graduates of the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, and each pursuing successful careers in their chosen field. Don was predeceased by his parents and his wife MaryAnn. He is survived by his sons; Mike Shallenberg (Michele) of South Dakota, John Shallenberg (Lisa) and their children Jack and Brooklynn of Windsor, CO, and Steve Shallenberg (Dezel) and their children Vaughn and Kendall of Ft. Collins, CO. The family would like to thank the staff of Centre Avenue Health & Rehab Facility, New Mercer Commons and Pathways Hospice for the kind and skilled care provided to Don. No services to be held.
