It is with deep respect and solemn reflection that we announce the passing of Robert "Lobby" O. Johnson, who departed this life on January 31, 2025, at his home in Monson, MA, at the age of 93. Robert was born on September 22, 1931, in Palmer, MA, to Ralph and Beatrice (Wallace) Johnson, who both predeceased him.  He was raised in Palmer, MA and then moved to Springfield for many years before settling in Monson in 1986.

Robert was a dedicated and steadfast pillar in his community, whose life was marked by service, both to his country and his community. A decorated veteran, Robert enlisted in the U.S. Army after graduating from Palmer High School, where he had previously excelled in two varsity sports, a fullback in football and left-handed pitcher in baseball, earning his place in the Palmer Hall of Fame. His military service during the Korean War was distinguished by immense sacrifice and bravery, which included a harrowing period when he was held as a prisoner of war for three years. For his valor, he was awarded the Korean Service Medal with four bronze stars, the United Nations Service Medal, and the Combat Infantry Badge. He was assigned to the 2nd Division 9th Infantry Regiment.

Upon returning to his beloved Palmer, he received the key to the city. Robert dedicated over 37 years to the U.S. Postal Service as a mail handler and driver, embodying the virtues of reliability and commitment. He was actively involved with the Palmer American Legion Post 130 where he served as a post commander and the VFW on Worthington Street, Springfield Ma.

Robert was not only a man of resolve but also one of simple pleasures and cherished entertainments. Those who knew him recall his passion for horse racing and his daily routine of reading the newspaper from cover to cover, savoring crossword puzzles, engrossing himself in sports, and never missing an episode of his favorite television show, Gunsmoke.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Irene H. (Chase) Johnson, his siblings; Bernard, Ralph, Charles, Leroy, Kenneth, Agnes Wallace and a daughter, Renee Johnson, as well as a grandson, Jawell.

His legacy lives on through his six children: Wanda Steele and her husband Carlton of Springfield, Robin Holland of Springfield, Cynthia Walker and her late husband Lamont of Springfield, Janet Sheppard of Springfield, June Jewell of Indiana, and Robert Johnson of Springfield, all of whom carry forward their father's wisdom and love. He was also a proud grandfather to 15 grandchildren, Matthew, Timothy, Taylor, Nicholas, Terrence, Travis, Lacee, Samuel, Emmanuel, King, Tiffany, Robert Michael, Teyawna, Robert Tamele, Charles and 19 great-grandchildren, Amelia, Gionni, Sophie, Jaxyn, Jacob, Hopelynn, Nyla, Zaire, Nassiah, Josiah, Jurnee, Islah, Lynnasia, Serenity, Tyla, Dream, Daisy, Iesha and Lanesha who brought unending joy and pride to his days.

He leaves behind his life partner Mary Lamb, their cherished pet Gabby along with her children and grandchildren. He is survived by his siblings Beatrice Hinkle of California and Donald "Sid" Johnson of Palmer and a multitude of nieces and nephews.

In accordance with his family's wishes, services were held privately, with Robert being laid to rest at the Mass. Veterans Cemetery in Agawam, a fitting tribute to a man who served his nation with dignity and honor.
