Beers and Story - Palmer
Earl H. Chaffee
November 3rd, 1948 - February 3rd, 2025
Earl H. Chaffee, 76, left this world on February 3, 2025, in Springfield, MA. Born on November 3, 1948, in Palmer, MA, Earl was a cherished member of the Monson and Palmer communities, where he lived a life marked by dedication, service, and love. Earl was the beloved son of the late Charles and Lorraine (Brouillette) Chaffee. He is survived by his devoted wife of 51 years, Kathleen M. (Backus), who shared with him a life full of love and companionship. Together, they raised two wonderful children, Jennifer (Christian) Young and Timothy (Shannon) Chaffee, who carry on his legacy. Earl took immense pride in his grandchildren—Jack, Alex, Aydan, Declan, and Tinsleigh—and was deeply involved in their lives, finding great joy in their presence. As a young man he enlisted in the Army and did a tour in Vietnam. He was a proud US Army Veteran and you would often find Earl wearing a VA shirt and hat, along with his patriotic suspenders. He marched in many Memorial Day Parades alongside fellow veterans. Professionally, Earl was a man of diligence and commitment. He worked as a bookkeeper at Palmer Trailer Sales for many years as well as plowing, doing landscaping work and construction. His work ethic was unmatched, and it was this dedication that later saw him maintain Bethany Cemetery with the utmost care and respect. Earl's contributions extended beyond his work; he was actively involved in the American Legion, where he advocated for the community and honored his fellow veterans. Earl was known for his easy-going personality and generous spirit. He had a penchant for savoring every meal and every moment, embodying a patience rarely seen in today's fast-paced world. His greatest joy and hobby was spending time with his grandchildren, in whom he instilled his values of kindness and determination. He leaves behind his siblings, Judy (Joe) Hinchey, Marie (Ray) Stockwell, Donald (Joanne) Chaffee, and Philip (Jamie) Chaffee, as well as his sister-in-laws, Holly Chaffee and Mary Chaffee. Earl was predeceased by his brother, David Chaffee. He will also be missed by his many nephews and nieces. Family, friends, and those whose lives were touched by Earl are invited to celebrate his life during a visitation on February 10th from 9:30 to 10:30 am at the funeral home. A Funeral Mass will follow at 11 am at St. Thomas Church, where military honors will be rendered. A burial ceremony is planned for the spring at the parish cemetery. Expressions of sympathy may be made to American Legion Post 241 or to a VA charity of choice, in honor of Earl's service and dedication to those who served alongside him.
