Robert Martinez
November 10th, 1930 - January 20th, 2025
Robert Martinez, beloved father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on January 20, 2025, at the age of 94. Born on November 10, 1930, on the family ranch in Juan Thomas, New Mexico to Pablo and Juanita Martinez.He served in the United States Army as a Korean War Combat Veteran from July 12, 1951, to March 28, 1953. Upon returning from Korea, he resumed his career as a construction worker. Despite only having an 8th-grade education, Robert excelled in his field, eventually becoming a supervisor overseeing multiple housing subdivision projects. He believed in hands-on training and hard work.
In the 1970s, Robert formed a Spanish band called "Bob and The Blue Jays." The band played for various occasions across the state. Their first recording, "Polkita Del Chapulin," became a number one seller in New Mexico . Their follow-up singles "Juanita" and "Clavelito" also achieved success, leading them to record an album. He was a self-taught musician, learning to play by ear, and he also played the accordion.
Robert was an avid hunter, going on hunting trips with family and friends every year until he lost his eyesight.Robert is survived by his son Jerry (Eloisa) Martinez, his daughter Rose (Mark) Carrillo, his brother Paul (Dora - deceased)Martinez, as well as 13 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, and 6 great-great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents, Pablo and Juanita Martinez, sons Michael, Ronnie, and Toby Martinez, granddaughter April Martinez, and grandson Antonio Carrillo, brothers Johnny, Willie (Merlinda) and Freddie Martinez, sisters Delia (Daniel) Trujillo and Lucy (Estolano) Griego.Robert's legacy is one of love, dedication, and resilience. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. He leaves behind his beloved dog, Dakota, who was his faithful companion. May he be reunited with all his family and friends who have gone before him.
Funeral services will be held on February 14, 2025 at Our Lady of Guadalupe. Rosary will be at 10:30am and the Mass immediately following.
Burial will take place on February 18, 2025 at Santa Fe National Cemetery at 11:00am.
