Hankins & Whittington Funeral Home
Janis L. Silverman
July 30th, 1946 - February 6th, 2025
Janis Lee Silverman of Matthews, NC, passed away peacefully at home with family on February 6, 2025. She was predeceased by her husband of 53 years, Richard Silverman, and is survived by her twin sister, Sharon Solomon (Howard), her two children, Mara Cobe (Russ) and Jiyad Alamin (Joi – longtime partner), her three grandchildren, Jacob Oller, Alauna Harris and Yeshua Alamin, as well as her great-granddaughter, Zariah Harris. Janis was a teacher and author who loved cats of all types, despite being allergic to them. Her home was filled with stuffed cats and cat art, as well as colorful dragonflies. She was a fighter who survived two rounds of breast cancer, skin cancer, and struggled with rheumatoid arthritis and Sjogren’s syndrome for several decades. She was an active member of Temple Beth El in Charlotte, NC for many years, and was involved with the Comparative Religion Committee for several years with her husband and had participated in many SPICE activities. Janis also participated in the Temple Israel Book Group, often accessing the books in audio format so that she could continue to participate. In recent years, she also became a member of Temple Solel in Fort Mill, SC, which allowed her to join services online and participate virtually in a widow and widower support group.
A graveside service will take place 1:30pm Monday, February 10, 2025, at Forest Lawn East Cemetery, 3700 Forest Lawn Drive, Matthews, NC 28104. For those of you who cannot attend the services in person you may watch at this link: https://client.tribucast.com/tcid/f25028829149443.

Our services are crafted to honor your loved ones in ways that are both deeply meaningful and healing. Our rich history began in 1946 when Irvin W. Hankins and James B. Whittington took the reins of the Crouch Funeral Home. The growth of our service and the community's support led to our move in March 1963 to the current location—once St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, built in 1930. Our chapel, a cherished historic landmark within the storied Dilworth neighborhood, is renowned for being the only funeral home in Charlotte graced with its own chapel, echoing with decades of history and serenity....
