Thomas David Bumgardner, known to most as Tom, passed away on February 11, 2025, at the age of 81, surrounded by the love and care of his daughter and son-in-law. Born on January 13, 1944, Tom was raised in the Prescott area of Arizona by his mother, Frances Hanger Bates, alongside his five siblings. Even as a child, Tom had a wandering spirit, always searching for something just out of reach. His grandmother once wrote in her journal, “He was hunting for something and still hadn’t found it.”

That search led him on many journeys throughout his life. In January of 1961, Tom enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served aboard the Constellation aircraft carrier until December of 1964. After his military service, he continued to roam, eventually finding his calling behind the wheel of a truck.

In the late 1970s, Tom met and married Barbara, and together they built a family, adopting Heather and welcoming their daughter, Kristel Ellen, in 1980. As a devoted truck driver and owner-operator, Tom spent years crisscrossing the country, always in pursuit of the next road ahead. His travels eventually led him back to Caldwell in 2011, where he found joy in spending time with his grandchildren and reconnecting with family.

Tom faced many health challenges in recent years, but through it all, he remained independent, finding comfort in the love of his family and the support of First Choice Hospice. His daughter, Kristel, and her husband, Montie, provided unwavering care, ensuring his final years were filled with love, dignity, and as much freedom as possible. His hospice nurse, Liz, was also a great source of support and kindness during his final journey.

Tom was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his daughter, Kristel Stills, and her husband, Montie, along with their children, Stone, Ryan, and Sophie Stills. He also leaves behind grandchildren Stefan Shoemaker, Courtney (Thomas) Dydasco, Allyson-Marie Nemic and great grandchildren. Tom is survived by his siblings Nancy Krause, Sandy Shaffer, Ronnie (Patti) Bates, and Peggy (Hector) Gonzalez, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

A graveside service with military honors will take place on Monday, March 17, 2025, at 2:00 PM at the Idaho State Veterans Cemetery, 10100 Horseshoe Bend Road in Boise. Services are under the care of Flahiff Funeral Chapel, Caldwell, (208) 459-0833.

His daughter says he was always waiting for the perfect load to head out—and this time, the return trip was just too good to pass up.

Be careful and be safe, Dad. We love you.
