Doris Marion Sullivan (Harden)
April 8, 1940 – February 10, 2025
It is with great sorrow that after an almost 3 year battle with ovarian cancer, the family of Doris Marion Sullivan (Harden), 84, of Summerville, SC, announces her peaceful passing on Monday, February 10, 2025, surrounded by her loving family and friends in her home.
Born in Frostburg, MD, on April 8, 1940, Doris was the daughter of the late Walter “Rusty” and Catherine (Starkey) Harden of Allegany County, Maryland. She had 2 sisters and a brother, Margaret Ann Hovis (deceased), Linda Lantz (Greenville,TN), and Water Harden (Slanesville, WV).
A loving and devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother, Doris cherished her family above all else. She is survived by her four children: Craig Sullivan (Cheryl) of Goose Creek, SC; Diane Murray of Pace, FL; Catherine Rubinstein (Phil Janse) of Charleston, SC; and Lisa Todd (Timothy) of Chattanooga, TN. Her grandchildren, Jennifer Wright, Allison Wright, Jillian Brown, Ashton Newman, Kayleigh Clayton, Molly Todd, Clayton Dillard, Jacob Rubinstein, Adam Rubinstein, Elaine Montero, and Allison Osborne, along with her great-grandchildren, Michaela Byrd, Emma Black, Adyson Black, James Pattison, Rileigh Brown, Baleigh Brown, Everleigh Brown, Finn Newman, Otis Newman, Magnolia Clayton, Sullivan Clayton, Caleb Montero, Shannon Montero, Helena Osborne, Thadeus Osborne, and her great-great-grandson, Xander Washington, were the joy of her life. Doris proudly shared the love of her 27 grandchildren with all who knew her.
Preceding Doris in death were her son, Carey Sullivan; her parents, Walter “Rusty” and Catherine Harden; her sister, Margaret Ann “Peggy” Hovis; her dear friend Mary Ludlum and Richard Joseph Sullivan.
Doris had a varied and fulfilling career, working as an office manager for Albert Weber, where she retired in 2023 after 28 years of service. In addition to her work with Weber, Doris held positions with Hobart, Doschers, and Russell Stovers Chocolates, forging many lasting friendships along the way.
Doris was a woman of remarkable talents and passions, from her athleticism to her artistic flair. She loved basketball in her youth and performed as the lead in two high school plays, showing her love for both sports and the arts. Outside of her career, Doris had many passions. She loved to travel, paint, collect rocks, and fish with her father. Her adventurous spirit led her to climb lighthouses, and she enjoyed bowling in her early years. She also had a deep commitment to service, participating in several organizations throughout her life, including the Lion’s Club, the American Business Women's Association (ABWA), United Methodist Women, and the Mothers of Twins Club among others.
Doris will be remembered for her generous heart, her joyful spirit, and how she loved people. She lived her life with purpose, always finding ways to share her love, whether through her service to others, her creativity, her devotion to her family, or her commitment to God.
A memorial service and celebration of life will be held at Aldersgate Methodist Church, 1444 Remount Road, North Charleston, SC on February 15, 2025, at 3:00 PM. There will be a reception following in the Social Hall of the Church. Her ashes will be interred at Mepkin Abbey in the spring. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Holy City Missions in her memory.
