Kristian "Kris" Ove Larson
September 25th, 1989 - February 7th, 2025
Kristian Ove Larson passed away unexpectedly on February 7, 2025, in Portland, OR, at the age of 35. Born on September 25, 1989, in Soldotna, AK, Kris carried the adventurous, community-centered spirit of his Alaskan roots throughout his life. He thrived in the company of others, always ready to strike up a conversation, share a laugh, or turn the most ordinary moment into something joyful.
Kris possessed a never ending curiosity about people and the world. Whether he was chatting with a neighbor, making friends with a stranger on the other side of the globe, or sharing time with loved ones, he had a rare and beautiful gift for connecting with people. He lived with a profound sense of generosity, always willing to give his energy, kindness, and a grin to those around him. His sense of justice ran deep—not in grand gestures, but in the way he moved through the world: with compassion, fairness, a jaunty step, and a belief that every person deserves dignity and care.
A lifelong learner, Kris graduated from Kenai Central High School in 2008 before attending Portland State University. There he earned his Bachelor of Arts in History with a minor in Spanish from Portland State University in 2012, followed by a Master of Arts in Education in 2015. He was a gifted and dedicated 4th-5th grade teacher, known for his enthusiasm, creativity, and deep commitment to his students.
While at Portland State, Kris was lucky to meet his soulmate Zoe Kellett. They spent 16 wonderful years together, marrying in 2015 and welcoming their beloved daughter, Sula, in 2022. Being a father was Kris’s greatest joy. He spent Sula’s first two years as a stay-at-home dad, filling their days with fun across the city and at home. He couldn’t pass by her without leaning down for a kiss, a small but constant reminder of the deep love he carried for his family.
Kris was raised in a family of musicians, music was deeply ingrained in who he was. According to his family, he sang before he could talk. He was constantly making up songs for the mundane, always jamming or harmonizing along and would improvise lyrics rather than be silent. For Kris, life was a great adventure, he found joy in hiking, camping, good food and traveling abroad.
Above all, Kris made the world a brighter place with his thoughtfulness, humor, and genuine interest in people. He knew the names of the employees handing out samples at Costco. He struck up conversations with people experiencing homelessness. He connected with other parents at local parks. He was a cherished uncle, brother, and son, bringing his infectious energy to every moment. His warmth and ability to make people feel seen and valued made him not only an exceptional teacher, but also an extraordinary friend.
Kristian is survived by his wife, Zoe, and daughter, Sula; his parents, Mark and Elaine; his sisters, Kjersta (Dustin) and Siri (Hal), and their families; and a large extended network of family and friends. His absence leaves an immeasurable void, but his love, laughter, and unfailing kindness will live on in all the lives he touched.
At this time, there are no immediate plans for a memorial, but his family hopes to honor and celebrate Kristian in the future.
