Reginald Hodgin Cude
May 9th, 1936 - February 20th, 2025
Reginald Hodgin Cude was born in Greensboro, NC, the eldest of three boys to Ernest Hodgin Cude and Anne Smith Hodgin Cude. Known to his friends and family as “Reggie,” he attended the Curry School, a public teacher training school on the campus of UNC-Greensboro (then the Women’s College), for grades K-12. There he excelled in the visual arts, winning several statewide competitions. Reginald graduated from the School of Design at North Carolina State University in 1959.
After a brief stint in the US Army, and a short apprenticeship at a local firm in his hometown, he moved to New York City where he worked for Abraham W. Geller and Marcel Breuer, before joining IM Pei & Partners in 1962. On a blind date in the summer of 1963, attending Shakespeare in the Park, he met Nancy Worrall, a Florida school teacher enrolled at Teachers College at Columbia. They were married December 31, 1966 in Greenville, PA.
In 1966, Reginald joined Mariani & Associates in Washington DC, where he would continue to work until his retirement in 2004. Notable designs include the Dahlgren Memorial Library at the Georgetown University Medical Center, residences Nevils and Village C at Georgetown, a building at the University of Southern California for the Marshall School of Business, the University Bookstore in Charlottesville, VA, several Washington DC Metro stations and the award-winning Children’s Playhouse at Rock Spring Cooperative Preschool, in Arlington VA.
Reggie served his community in a number of roles over the years, as a member of the Arlington County Landmark Review Board and the school district’s Capital Improvement Task Force, chair of the county’s Design Review committee, and as president of the Waycroft-Woodlawn Civic Association. He served in numerous capacities at Dumbarton United Methodist Church over the course of 50 years, including designing and completing several improvements to the two-century-old church. His most significant design contribution (to his immediate family) was the addition to the small two bedroom, one-bathroom home he and wife Nancy purchased in 1970.
He will be fondly remembered for his appreciation of foreign cars - though he bought very few. He was also known for collecting art, and his appreciation of mid-century modern furniture, both of which filled the family home. He was an avid sports fan, especially of ACC Basketball and the Washington Commanders. One of his greatest sports joys was watching the NC State Wolfpack make their run to the 1983 NCAA basketball championship.
Reggie was a devoted and loving father and husband who was married to his wife, Nancy Cude, for 58 years and passed away only four days after she. He is survived by his son Jonathan Cude (Lea) of Hillsborough, NC, daughter Jennifer Slatkin (Jon) of Seattle, WA, grandchildren Bella of Los Angeles, CA, Seraphina, Mollie, and Eli, and by brother Michael Cude of Sumter, SC. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Anne and brother Robert Cude of Ashland, VA
