In Loving Memory of Steven Ray Stark-Tollefson
With heavy hearts, we say goodbye to Steven Ray Stark-Tollefson, a man whose laughter, kindness, and unwavering spirit left an unforgettable mark on all who knew him. Born on March 5, 1991, at St. Luke's Hospital in Denver, CO, Steven was a force of nature—authentic, caring, and endlessly funny. Though he was named after the legendary Stevie Ray Vaughan, it was his father’s last name, Tollefson, that he carried forward with pride.
Steven grew up in Applewood, Colorado, surrounded by his loving family: his father, Olaf Tollefson, his mother, Susan Stark, his sister, Versailles Stark, and his beloved grandmother, Lillian Tollefson. From a young age, Steven embraced adventure, tagging along with his older sister in anything she did. He really enjoyed riding ATVs, shooting guns, and helping his grandfather on the ranch. His greatest passion, however, was for trucks and cars, a love he shared with his dad. Some of his fondest memories were attending car shows and watching races at Bandimere Speedway, where his father worked for several years.
A Son’s Deep Love for His Father
Steven deeply loved and admired his father, Olaf. He looked up to him not only as a parent but as a role model, a teacher, and a best friend. The bond they shared was unbreakable, and Steven cherished every moment spent by his father's side. Whether they were working on cars together, cheering at the races, or simply sitting in comfortable silence, Steven felt a sense of belonging and pride in being his father’s son. Olaf’s humor, work ethic, kindness, and pride shaped the man Steven became, and he carried those lessons with him throughout his own life.
Losing his father at a young age was devastating for Steven, but he never stopped honoring his memory. He kept his father’s spirit alive through stories, traditions, and by embodying the values Olaf instilled in him. Even in adulthood, he often spoke of his dad with love and admiration, sharing how much he missed him and wished he were still alive.
A Life of Service and Strength
Steven faced adversity with courage and resilience. After losing both his grandmother and father within six months, Steven, at the age of 16, moved in with his sister, who became not only his guardian but also his greatest source of strength. From childhood through his teenage years, she was by his side—guiding, protecting, and supporting him through life’s challenges. That same year, he became a proud uncle to Avalynn Brnak, embracing the role with love and playfulness.
At just 17 and a half, driven by a sense of duty and adventure, Steven enlisted in the U.S. Army. He completed basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, MO, before deploying to Iraq, where he served as a squad leader responsible for the well-being of 10 soldiers. His role as driver and convoy commander put him in charge of transporting vital resources across dangerous terrain. His leadership, dedication, and unwavering commitment to his fellow soldiers earned him recognition from the Commanding General and Sergeant Major.
After returning home in 2011, Steven transitioned into private security, eventually launching his own security business in the Colorado mountains, where he found peace in the high country.
During this time, Steven met Brittany. From the moment they connected, their bond was undeniable. She quickly became his partner and greatest source of support. Over the years, their love deepened, and Steven lovingly referred to Brittany as his wife, a title that reflected the commitment and devotion they shared. Through every challenge and every triumph, they stood by each other, creating a life filled with love, laughter, and unwavering support. They built a life where Steven could truly be himself and Brittany remained by his side until his final days.
A Spirit That Could Light Up Any Room
Steven most definitely was not handed an easy life and faced hardships few could endure—from difficult family relationships to the loss of his father to the continual serious health issues he battled. Despite these obstacles, he faced them with strength and resilience, using his humor to light the way.
Steven was the kind of person who made life more fun. He was a movie lover, and Christmas was never complete without a trip to the theater. His love for Jim Carrey and Ace Ventura meant that no conversation was safe from a perfectly timed impersonation. His quick wit, infectious humor, and ability to find joy in any situation made him the guy you wanted in your corner—whether you needed a laugh, a deep conversation, or someone to just sit with you in silence.
He was a fiercely loyal friend, a protector at his core, and a man who lived authentically. He had a way of making everyone feel important, of turning ordinary moments into cherished memories. He leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and resilience that will live on in the hearts of those who were lucky enough to know and love him.
Steven’s absence leaves an unfillable void, but his spirit will never fade. He was a man who loved deeply, laughed loudly, and lived fully. While we grieve this loss, we also celebrate the beautiful soul he was and the countless ways he made the world brighter.
Steven, you were truly one of a kind. Thank you for the laughter, the friendship, and the love. Your absence leaves a void beyond measure. Be free and at peace, dear Steven. May we honor your spirit by smiling through our tears and sharing laughter in your memory.
