Hubert "Shu" W. Shumaker
May 21st, 1929 - November 30th, 2014
Hubert "Shu” Wayne Shumaker passed away suddenly due to a home accident on November 30, 2014 at the age of 85. He was born May 21, 1929 in Star Junction, PA to Robert William and Margaret Delilah Shumaker. He graduated from Jefferson High School, PA and then entered the United States Air Force on February 18, 1949 where he served for 29 years, retiring on January 1, 1977. He married Violet Walters on November 30, 1950. Their first child, Monica Sue was born on December 15, 1951. His assignments in the Air Force were Lackland AFB, An Antonio, TX, Griffiss AFB, Rome, NY, Kelly AFB, San Antonio, TX, Hqs MAYS, Andrews AFB, MD, Dhaharan, Saudi Arabia, Sacramento, CA where their 2nd child, Gary Wayne was born on April 5, 1954; Pentagon; Munich and Wiesbaden, Germany; Suffolk County AFB, L I, NY; Ent AFB Colorado Springs, CO where their 3rd Child Melanie Rae was born. On March 22, 1963; Diyarbakir AS, Turkey; NORAD, Cheyenne Mountain, Colorado Springs; Cigli AF, Izmir, Turkey; Incirlik AFB, Turkey; Zaragoza AB Spain; Minot AFB, North Dakota; Rickenbacker AFB, Ohio. While living in each locale, Shu was always busy. He hunted and fished. While in Turkey, he was considered as "the hunter” and made many trips either to the mountains or to the plains. His mountain trips were most successful. He killed perhaps a record number of Wild Boars, many exceeded 500 pounds; a record amount of Ibex; and on the plains a record amount of Gazelle. He killed a record amount of Chucker in one days hunt. In addition to hunting and fishing, he and his family flew to England and bought a new 1969 British Land Rover and drove it down through Europe and the Communist country of Yugoslavia. He and his family visited the various Biblical cities, such as the seven churches of Asia; and all the Biblical Cities found in Asia Minor. He has many souvenirs from each locale. After retirement, he and his wife continued to travel to such places as Cuba; Puerto Rico; Mexico; Hawaii; plus a seven day cruise from San Diego, CA to Mexico. They also made many road trips. They had about every trailer from a 5th wheel down to a Pop-up Camper. Upon his retiring from the USAF and moving to Evans, CO in 1976, he was active in the community. He was known as "The Wood’n Shu” and after retiring from his business, he worked for Habitat for Humanity for some eight years, where he was the Building Superintendent. He was in charge of building the first Blitz House west of the Mississippi River. Shu moved to Ohio, where he and his wife found 1.5 acres in a country setting and designed and built a 2,400 sq. ft. home with two oversized garages, one of which became his workshop. In 2003, they decided to return to Evans where he had a house built and where Shu was president of the HOA for about six years before retiring. Shu was baptized in Wiesbaden, Germany in 1959 and has been active in the church wherever he was located. He is responsible for starting two different congregations in Zaragoza, Spain. He was a member of the Westview Church of Christ in Greeley. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Violet of Evans; children, Monica (Daniel) Link of Johnstown, CO, and Gary (Cindy) Shumaker of Saratoga, WY.; five grandchildren, Zackary Shumaker of Laramie, WY, Daniel Shumaker of Saratoga, Steven Shumaker of Casper, WY, Lindsey Jansen of Fairport, NY and Nathan Jones of Johnstown,CO; and ten great grandchildren. In addition to his immediate family, Shu is also survived by his brother, LaMar and sister, Beverly both living in Pennsylvania. Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, December 8, 2014 with viewing one hour prior at Westview Church of Christ, 4151 20th Street, Greeley. Interment will be at 2:30 p.m. at Ft. Logan National Cemetery in Denver, CO Staging area "B”.
