In Loving Memory of Joyce Yanno Brookins
Joyce Yanno Brookins passed away peacefully on February 19, 2025. Born to Mary (Principe) and Anthony Yanno, Joyce was a lifelong resident of Gloversville, where she built a life filled with love, resilience, and dedication to others.
A proud graduate of Gloversville High School, Joyce went on to earn her teaching degree from Brockport University. She dedicated her career to education, shaping young minds in local elementary schools before concluding her professional journey at the Tryon School for Boys and Girls in Johnstown. Joyce had a passion for teaching, and her impact extended well beyond the classroom. She formed lasting, supportive relationships with her students, many of whom fondly remember her as an innovative and caring mentor who believed in their potential, both academically and personally. She cherished reconnecting with former students, delighting in their life stories and reminiscing about their time together.
Beyond her devotion to education, Joyce found joy in the outdoors. In her prime, she was an avid walker and was dedicated to fitness. Summers at her camp in Caroga Lake were some of her happiest times, where she could be found enjoying the beach, sunbathing, and sharing laughter with family and friends. Her nickname, “Joy,” could not have been more fitting as she had a remarkable gift for bringing happiness and laughter to those around her. With her warm and vibrant spirit, she was the heart of every gathering, spreading "Joy" to all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Joyce's life was marked by both triumph and tragedy. She endured the heartbreaking loss of her son, Kevin, at a young age, and later faced the challenge of losing her mobility. Despite these hardships, Joyce remained a fighter—resilient, determined, and always finding ways to uplift those around her with her smile and unwavering strength.
Predeceased by her beloved son, Kevin, and her dear brother, William Yanno, Joyce leaves behind a family who cherished her deeply. She is survived by her loving brother, Jack (Ursula) Yanno, and sister-in-law, Beverly (William) Yanno. Joyce was a devoted and treasured aunt to James (Jennifer) Yanno, Gina Yanno King, Anthony Yanno, Scott Yanno, Bill Deming, and Bob Deming. She also shared a special bond with cousins, Crisan Anadio and Thomas Anadio. A proud great-aunt, Joyce will be fondly remembered by her many nieces and nephews, whose lives she touched with love and kindness.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Nathan Littauer Nursing Home for their compassionate care and support. In Joyce’s memory, donations may be made to the Church of the Holy Spirit and Nathan Littauer Nursing Home.
A memorial service to celebrate Joyce’s life will be held this spring.
May her legacy of love, laughter, and perseverance continue to inspire all who were fortunate to know her.
