It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Dennis L. Stewart-Payne, who left this world on February 18, 2025, at the age of 82 in Olympia, Washington. Dennis was born on June 2, 1942, in Pampa, Texas, raised in Pomona and San Pedro, California, cities that bore witness to the early chapters of his life.

A man whose dedication and work ethic were second to none, Dennis graduated from San Pedro High School in 1960 and subsequently honed his skills at the Los Angeles Culinary Institute in 1961. His passion for cooking defined his professional life, beginning his career at Hamburger Hut in San Pedro, California, and later contributing to the success of DiCarlo Bakery. His commitment to his craft left lasting impressions on colleagues and customers alike.

Dennis was a devoted husband to his beloved wife, Jackie Payne, with whom he shared nearly five decades of marriage, having been united in Pomona, California, on May 7, 1975. He said becoming “papa” was his greatest joy. He was a cherished father to his sons Ronnie Payne, Troy Swearingen, and Bret Swearingen, and his daughters, Christine M. Fleenor (Russel) and Laura D. Payne. His legacy of love and laughter continues through his seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

A member of Hidden Creek Community Church, Dennis's retirement years were imbued with a spirit of service. An enthusiastic volunteer, he delighted in hosting missionaries from across the globe and generously shared his culinary talents with men's group and Prime Timers. His commitment to his community was also evident in his involvement with the Seeds of Hope gardening and the Source Food Bank.

Dennis's personality was a tapestry woven with strands of reliability, joy, and love. A devoted family man, he was known for his joyful demeanor, loyalty, and nurturing presence. Beyond his community service, Dennis found joy in creative pursuits such as wood engraving, gardening, sketching, and cooking.

Dennis was predeceased by his father, Lawrence D. Payne, his mother, Edith M. Stewart, his brother, Emery Ross (Ronnie) Stewart, and his sister, Melanie Stewart. Yet, his influence and memory will endure in the hearts of those who knew him.

A celebration of Dennis's life will be held on March 15, 2025, at 11 am at Hidden Creek Community Church, located at 1807 9th Ave SW, Olympia, WA 98502. In lieu of flowers, he family kindly requests that donations in his memory be made to Hidden Creek Community church, Assured Hospice, Attn: Shelby, 2102 Carriage Dr SW #H, Olympia, WA 98502.

As we honor Dennis's memory, we remember a hard-working and loving man whose life was a testament to the power of community, family, and unwavering dedication.
