Fielding "Ted" Theodore Atchley, Jr
November 5th, 1946 - February 26th, 2025
Fielding Theodore Atchley, Jr. (Ted) Fielding Theodore Atchley, Jr., affectionately known as Ted, passed away peacefully at home on February 26, 2025, in Summerville, South Carolina, at the age of 78.
Born on November 5, 1946, in Jacksonville, Florida, to the late Fielding Theodore Atchley, Sr., and Lorrayne Brittain Atchley, Ted was a man who possessed a deep love for history and family. He graduated from Baptist College in Charleston, South Carolina, in August 1970, earning a Bachelor's degree in History with a minor in Divinity. Furthering his theological studies, he received a Master's in Divinity from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in May 1984.
Ted dedicated many years to Service Finance Company, the company founded by his own grandfather, James Edgar Atchley. Later, he worked for National Finance. However, his true passion lay in sharing the rich history of his beloved Charleston, South Carolina. As a licensed tour guide, he captivated visitors with his knowledge and storytelling until retiring in 2020. He was known for his unique historical insights, making each tour a memorable experience.
His love of history extended to his family. He meticulously researched and documented the Atchley family history, leaving a lasting legacy for future generations. He also was an avid sports fan, with a particular passion for NASCAR, enjoying the thrill of the race.
He was a loving husband to Rebecca Faust Atchley, and a devoted father to Fielding Theodore "Ted" Atchley, III, and Lorrayne Lynn Atchley Calabrese. His legacy continues through his grandchildren, Austin Jay Wells, Sarah Brittain Atchley, and Nathaniel Theodore Atchley, and his great-grandson, Brayden Jay Wells. He was predeceased by his brothers, Allen Edgar Atchley and Daniel Pleas Atchley.
Ted will be remembered for his determined spirit, his talent for research, his passion for history, his love of NASCAR, and his dedication to his family. His memory will live on in the stories he shared, and the history he preserved.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, February 28, 2025, at Simplicity: Lowcountry Cremation and Burial Services, located at 281 Treeland Dr Suite C, Ladson, SC 29456. The family will receive friends beginning at 10:00 AM, followed by a service at 11:00 AM.
