Merritt (“Mer Bear”) Christine Hurd of Charlotte, North Carolina passed away from complications related to a congenital heart defect on February 25, 2025, at Levine Children’s Hospital. She was born on February 10, 2025 to William Grant and Elizabeth Christine Hurd.

From her first breath, Merritt was a radiant light and a testament to God’s faithfulness and love. Her journey, though brief, was marked by resilience, beauty and the ability to touch the hearts of everyone she met. Her bright blue eyes, precious toes and little personality drew people in, and she was prayed over, sang over and cherished every day of her life. Her hospital room became a sanctuary where God’s presence was tangible.

Though Merritt’s time on earth was short, her impact was wide - teaching her family and so many others about how to care for each other during the hardest of times and how to pray with deep belief, without ceasing. Her family is comforted by the knowledge that she is now in heaven, fully healed.

Merritt, our sweet Mer Bear, you were loved beyond measure. Your life was a gift to us, and we are changed forever because of you. We couldn’t love you more.

Her parents would like to extend a thank you to the remarkable staff at Levine Children’s Hospital for their extraordinarily loving care of Merritt. They would also like to thank their family, friends and community at Hope Community Church for their unwavering love and support.

In addition to her parents, Merritt is survived by her grandparents George and Lori Crumpton, Maria McLean, Bill Hurd (Robin) her great grandmother Christine Shull and her aunt Katherine Crumpton.

Merritt’s Celebration of Life service will be at 2:00pm on Saturday March 8, 2025, at the Hope Community Church South End site with Pastor Mark Upton officiating.

Address: 3021 Griffith Street Charlotte, NC 28203. Street parking is available surrounding the church along with the PPG lot across the street.

Her family will receive friends and family following the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Merritt’s name to The Heartest Yard, a family support program for pediatric cardiovascular patients and their families in the Carolinas https://receptionsforresearch.org/ or Madelyn’s Fund, which supports infant and pediatric patients and their families https://madelynsfund.org

The growth of our service and the community's support led to our move in March 1963 to the current location—once St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, built in 1930. Our chapel, a cherished historic landmark within the storied Dilworth neighborhood, is renowned for being the only funeral home in Charlotte graced with its own chapel, echoing with decades of history and serenity....
