Salvatore Joseph Denaro, known as “Sal” to his friends, died peacefully at age 93, on February 24, 2025, at his home in West Deptford, NJ, surrounded by his family.
He was born to Frank and Josephine Caruso Denaro on March 23, 1931, in South Amboy, NJ. He was preceded in death by his parents and five siblings. Sal cherished his Italian heritage, reflected in his passion for Italian food, music, culture, and service. This passion is exemplified by his long-term membership in the Order of Sons and Daughters of Italy in America.
After graduating from Perth Amboy High School in 1948, Sal enlisted in the United States Army and proudly served during the Korean War. He earned a Korean Service medal with one bronze service star and a United Nations service medal. He was discharged as a corporal on January 25, 1954. Later, he became involved with local Veterans of Foreign Wars organizations and began his lifelong commitment to charitable work. Sal ended a long career in food services as a Manager for Food Fair before beginning another long career in window sales for Thermal Guard from which he retired. He was a parishioner at St. Margaret’s for more than 40 years.
He was a consummate card player who held standing weekly games of Texas Hold’em and Pinochle at halls like the Garrison, where he met without fail every Monday and Wednesday to play with the guys.
Sal is survived by his wife of 46 years, Marilyn (nee Privalle) Denaro; his children, Denise Bogda (Ron), Dennis Denaro (Valerie), and Diane Brubaker; his stepsons, Lee (Diana) and Robert Jacobs; his grandchildren, Carl Ivey III, Dominick Ivey, Sr., Dennis Jay Denaro, and Corinne, Lee J. Our beautiful funeral home in Woodbury was originally built in the late 1700s, and has since been rebuilt to honor its original charm and comfortable, warm feel. Once you walk through our doors, you become family....
