Houston Ray "Butch" Chambers
November 7th, 1949 - February 27th, 2025
“Houston, we no longer have a problem”
Houston Ray Chambers was born November 07, 1949, in Yonkers, New York to Houston Chambers and Jean Bagley. Named after his father, Houston was affectionately known as “Butch” by his family and close friends. He would later be known to many as “Doc”.
Houston graduated from Saunders Trades & Technical High School. Following his graduation, he pursued further education at a school of aeronautics and qualified as an Aircraft Mechanic. In 1971, he enlisted in the United States Air Force, where he served until his honorable discharge on January 31, 1975. Subsequently, he joined Sperry Flight Systems' Space Systems Division, contributing to the design of the space shuttle.
He married Cornetta Wilson January 1, 1972. In the summer of 1976, they welcomed their daughter, Danielle DaLynn Chambers. Houston enjoyed fishing and he spent time teaching Danielle how to hook a worm (she preferred to use corn) and cast a line. Houston shared his love of planes with his daughter, and they would often go to Luke Air Force Base to watch The Blue Angels perform.
Houston possessed remarkable talent and had a profound passion for music. In his early years, he was an outstanding drummer who received his first drum set from his cousin, Elmer “Fuddle” Bagley, a drummer and actor. Despite not having any formal lessons, Houston taught himself to play and quickly mastered the drums.
As an Aircraft Mechanic, Houston had a deep love for planes, as well as for cars. His ability to design, build, and repair anything made him the go-to mechanic for everyone, earning him the nickname "Doc" (Car Doctor) due to his extensive knowledge of automobiles. Upon purchasing a pink van, he became known as a Mobile Mechanic.
Few people are aware that in addition to his mechanical expertise, Houston excelled in mathematics and designed a solar-powered car in the early 1980s. Despite his slender frame, Houston had a strong appreciation for food. Some of his favorite dishes included menudo, pigs' feet, collard greens, chitlins, shrimp, popcorn, pork rinds/chicharrones, as well as his ex-wife's homemade potato salad and sweet potato pie.
Houston was a dedicated and affectionate son. His biological father was hospitalized after a severe accident that left him bed-bound. As a child, Houston frequently rode his bike to visit his father. Later in life, he also demonstrated his commitment to his mother. After the unexpected passing of his younger brother Scott, Houston devoted 16 years to caring for his mother, Jean Spivey, until her death. Houston returned to Phoenix, Arizona on January 9, 2024, to attend his daughter's anniversary party/reception. Due to health complications that prevented him from flying, he did not return to New York.
Preceding him in death are Houston Chambers (father), Jean Spivey (mother), King Solomon Spivey (stepfather), brothers Stephen and Scott Spivey, Pearl “Nana” Bagley (grandmother) Darnell Bernard (aunt and godmother), Kenneth Kareem Chambers (nephew), James Salvatto (cousin), and Elmer “Fuddle” Bagley (cousin). Houston leaves to cherish his memory his daughter, Danielle (Jason) Gagné, Celeste Spivey (sister), Kenneth Chambers (brother), Janie Salvatto (aunt), Cornetta Wilson (ex-wife), Meredith “Mert” Parrish (a long-time friend who became a brother), and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
