Viegut Funeral Home
Gary Allen Schmidt
October 11th, 1940 - March 1st, 2025
Gary Allen Schmidt left this beautiful Earth when he passed away peacefully at Medical Center
of the Rockies on March 1, 2025, at the age of 84.
Gary was born in Tonawanda, New York, on October 11, 1940. He graduated from Tonawanda
High School in 1958 and served in the United States Navy from 1958 to 1961 before going on
to earn his Bachelors of Science degree in electrical engineering from the State University of
New York at Buffalo in 1965 and then his Masters of Science in electrical engineering from the
University of Syracuse in 1969.
Gary married his childhood sweetheart Barbara in 1964 and they were together for over 47
years until she was called home before him in 2012. They raised four loved children together,
Randy, Michael, Sara, and Jason and also served as a host family for four (4) foreign exchange
students over the years.
After earning his master’s degree, Gary started his career at Bausch & Lomb in Rochester, NY
before accepting a job offer at Hach Company and moving his family west to Loveland,
Colorado in 1978. He and Barbara fell in love with Colorado’s natural beauty and Gary
continued working for Hach until his retirement. After retirement, he and Barbara moved to
Windsor to enjoy their golden years at their house on Jodee Reservoir.
Gary was an avid bridge player for decades and a fierce competitor at the table. He also
enjoyed bird photography, traveling, and kept his active mind busy with puzzles of all kinds.
He was a devoted husband and a loving father who was totally committed to his family and
enjoyed nothing more than being surrounded by his children and grandchildren and relished
taking them fishing and on camping trips.
Gary is survived by his four children and five grandchildren, Allison, JaKada, Keyana, Kaiden
and Makaya. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM at Trinity Lutheran Church in Loveland
on Tuesday, March 11, 2025. A reception at the church will follow immediately after the
service. In lieu of flowers, please make donations in Gary’s name to the Bird Conservancy of
the Rockies (www.birdconservancy.org)
