Samuel Edelstein
January 16th, 1928 - February 25th, 2025
It is with great sadness that the family of Samuel Edelstein, 97, announces his passing on Tuesday, February 25, 2025, in Henderson, Nevada. Sam was born January 16, 1928, in New York City, New York, to Morris and Rose. Growing up in the city with his older brother Al is where Sam developed his passion for baseball, a sport he continued playing into his eighties. New York is also where he met the love of his life, Barbara. After graduating high school, Sam served overseas at the end of World War II, as a U.S. Army medic. He was proud to graduate from New York University, having attended on a combination of the G.I. Bill and a baseball scholarship. Sam and Barbara married in 1952 - having been together since their teens - and two years later they moved to California. They eventually settled in Hacienda Heights, where they raised their two children, Mike and Lynne, had many close friends, and made a wonderful life together. As a school teacher, Sam served as a positive influence on many young minds with a 30-year career in the Los Angeles City School District. Retirement led Sam and Barbara to relocate to Palm Desert, where they enjoyed 20 happy years in Sun City, being involved in the community and forging great friendships. Sam had the honor of being the oldest man on the Sun City softball team, eventually hanging up his cleats at the age of 86. In 2015 Sam and Barbara came to Boulder City, Nevada, to be closer to family. After Barbara passed in 2016, Sam remained in the area, where he had wonderful neighbors and was close to his son, daughter-in-law, and extended family. Eventually Sam decided to move to Merrill Gardens in Henderson, where for the last 3 1/2 years he made new friends and had a wonderful support system. The family wishes to express profound gratitude to the staff of Merrill Gardens and of Brighton Hospice for their compassionate care toward the end of Sam's life. Leaving a legacy of family dedication, hard work, and friendship, Sam is survived by devoted children, Mike and his wife Mary, Lynne and her husband Gary; grandchildren of whom he was so proud, Shelly and her husband Aaron, Julie and her husband Travis, and Jacob; and great-grandchildren who brought him so much joy, Ayden and Avner. Sam is predeceased by his loving wife Barbara, his parents, and his brother Al. Rest in peace, Sam. May your memory be a blessing. Services will be held at 9:20 am, Monday, March 17, 2025, at Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Boulder City, Nevada. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donating to Honor Flight Southern Nevada at www.honorflightsouthernnevada.org, in memory of Sam Edelstein.
