"Even while serving our nation with valor, a father's love remains the strongest shield, a constant anchor in the storm, and the brightest beacon guiding his children home."

Fredrick Eugene Carter, 85, passed away on March 14th, 2025, peacefully at home in Knoxville, TN, with his loving wife at his side after a lengthy battle with cancer and dementia.

He was born in Gate City, VA, to the late Marion and Fannie Carter; he graduated from Gate City High School in 1959 and enjoyed many years of monthly luncheons with his classmates. Fred served three years in the US Army and was a disabled veteran.

He worked for Grady Auto Parts in Gate City for several years and Automotive Supply in Kingsport. Fred held many positions at Kingsport Moose Lodge, including governor. He got his dream job in 1990 with NAPA Auto Parts in Knoxville. You knew Fred was in the building when you heard, “It’s a great day at NAPA.” He retired in 2011 and pursued his love of photography and history by adding numerous entries to ancestry.com; he spent hours traveling to cemeteries throughout Scott County and beyond to photograph tombstones and post the information on findagrave.com. His dedication to these two projects will live on forever.

Fred was preceded in death by his parents: Marion and Fannie Carter, and sister, Sybil Hammonds. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Rubye Carter; children Cindy Carol Williams (Brad) and Fredrick Lee Carter (Lancia); Grandchildren Stephanie Williams, Matthew Williams, Sara Hopcroft, Nathan Williams, and Finley James Carter; two great-grandchildren and one on the way.

Services will be held at the Carter Trent Funeral Home in Weber City, VA. Family and friends will be received on Wednesday, March 19th, 2025, from 5-7pm, with service to follow, Reverend Jesse Hughes officiating. Military Graveside service with full Military Honors will be held at Holston View on Thursday, March 20th, 2025, at 2pm.

In lieu of flowers, we request donations be made to Feral Feline Friends of East Tennessee due to Fred’s deep love of cats. Donations can be made online
