Eugene "Gene" Martin Campbell
November 26th, 1927 - March 18th, 2025
Eugene (Gene) Martin Campbell passed away March 18, 2025 at the Department of Veterans Affairs, Hospice Unit. Gene was born November 26, 1927 in Nicholas County, Kentucky to the late William Henry and Myrtle Lee Campbell. He was also preceded in death by his loving wife Rosemary, sister Mary Evelyn Fuller, brother-n-law JC Fuller, son-n-law HM Snodgrass and an infant son, “Tiny Tim”. Gene began working as a store clerk as a young teenager before joining the Navy. He decided to join the Navy because he knew he would always have a bed on the ship. He served his country during World War II for “3 years, 2 months and 23 days.” He was stationed in San Francisco and Hawaii. After his military service, Gene married Rosemary in Georgetown, KY and started work as a butcher. He later became a carpenter and worked for Sanford Miller and later Robert Hutcherson.
Gene started his own building and remodeling business in Frankfort until his retirement in 1989. At that time, Gene and Rosemary became snowbirds at Live Oak RV Resort in Arcadia, Fl. until Rosemary passed away in 2010. Gene continued to winter in Arcadia where he enjoyed playing golf with his good friend Dwayne Cummins. Gene was a talented musician playing in a band with the late Kenny Price and playing his guitar at church. The guitar was his instrument of choice, but he also played the piano, trumpet, trombone, clarinet, flute, mandolin, violin, banjo and fiddle. He loved listening to the bluegrass hits of the “Moron Brothers.” He was baptized into Christ at Southland Christian Church.
Gene is survived by 3 daughters, Teressa Witherby (Dave), Susie Snodgrass and Donna Jean Campbell (Tommy), 6 grandchildren, Kristi Welsh (David), Kelley Maguire (Ryan), Katie Bratton (Bruce), Russell Campbell (Amanda), Emilee Sierp (Micah), and Haylee Walters (Nathan), 15 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild. Services will be held on Tuesday, March 25 at Clark Legacy Center, Frankfort, KY with visitation from 9am to 11am, funeral at 11am and Interment at noon at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Serving as Pallbearers will be Russell Campbell, Bruce Bratton, Micah Sierp, Nathan Gray, Drew Welsh, and Nate Welsh. Honorary Pallbearers include Noah Maguire, Kaden Bratton, Lucas Maguire, Eli Maguire, Henry Thomas Sierp, Nash Martin Campbell, David Welsh, Kolston Bratton, and Ryan Maguire. In lieu of flowers, please contribute to your favorite Veteran Program.
