Richard John Barnett

Richard John Barnett, affectionately known as Papa, Barney, Dick, and to his son’s fraternity brothers as “Barndog,” passed away at the age of 86. Born on April 27, 1938, in Detroit, Michigan, Richard lived a full and active life, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and cherished memories.

A lifelong athlete, Richard was passionate about sports. He was an avid softball player, starting as a fast-pitch pitcher before transitioning into slow-pitch and blooper ball, playing for years with his beloved Lions Club. His competitive spirit extended beyond the diamond—he was also a dedicated racquetball player, bowler, and golfer, always up for a game and the camaraderie that came with it.

Richard is survived by his devoted wife of nearly 65 years, Kaye; his loving daughter, Lesli, of Pittsburgh, PA; his son, Rick (Leah), of Charlotte, NC.  Grandchildren Parker (Kate), Gabrielle, Harrison and Broderick; as well as many adoring nieces, nephews, and a vast circle of incredible friends he made along the way.

Cremation has taken place, and a celebration of Richard’s life will be held in Matthews, NC, and Michigan, with details to be announced soon.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Lions International, an organization close to Richard’s heart.
