Larry Jerome Hughes
March 4th, 1958 - March 10th, 2025
Larry was born on March 4, 1958, in Chicago, Illinois, to his loving parents John Alphonso Hughes and Laura Estelle Packnett Hughes. He spent his formative years in Chicago, where he developed a passion for connecting with people and a love for animals. After marrying Kay (Eshelman) Hughes and having two children - Carrie and Myles, Larry relocated to Minnesota in 1988 to build a life full of new opportunities and adventures.
Larry was a hardworking and resourceful man, dedicated to providing for his family. Over the years, he held various roles that reflected his love for animals and his entrepreneurial spirit. These included working at the Animal Humane Society in Illinois and Minnesota, later becoming a business owner of a humane animal rescue in Minnesota. In addition, Larry worked for US Bank and Rainbow Foods/Cub Foods, where he retired at 64.
When Larry wasn't working, he embraced life with enthusiasm and joy. A passionate fisherman, camper, and road tripper, he could often be found near the water or exploring the outdoors. He was also a proud season ticket holder for the Minnesota Timberwolves, a true fan of the game. Larry had an appreciation for life's simple pleasures, from experimenting with the hottest hot sauces to gardening and treasure hunting. Above all, he cherished time spent with his family and friends.
With an infectious gift of gab and the ability to connect with anyone, Larry was never socially shy. Whether he was sharing a hearty laugh or offering a listening ear, he made everyone feel welcome. He was also a talented cook, famous for his fried chicken and BBQ, and a devoted animal lover who rescued and cared for countless dogs throughout his lifetime.
Larry's heart for service extended beyond his family and friends. He volunteered for numerous organizations, including Family Values for Life, Wilder Wednesday and countless back to school events, Arlington Recreation Center and First Covenant Food Shelf. Giving back to his community was a priority for Larry, especially after his retirement.
Larry joined Contender for the Faith Church in 2009. There in 2010, he gave his life to the Lord. In 2011, he married his wife Julie and 2015 he was given the honor of Deacon, where they served faithfully together for many years. As a Deacon, Usher, and member of the Financial Committee, Larry was always willing to lend a helping hand, both in and out of the church community. He was a devoted servant of the Lord and to the Contender for the Faith church family.
Larry is survived by his wife Julie, his children Carrie (Kay), Myles (Kay), Tyrisha (Julie), Felicia (Julie), Alicia (Julie), Shanina (Julie), Tommy (Julie), and Darius (Julie). He was a proud grandfather to seven grandchildren and a loving brother to Michael. Larry was preceded in death by his father, John Alphonso Hughes (July 14,1975) and his mother, Laura Estelle Packnett Hughes (September 16, 2016).
Thomas Campbell once said, "To live in the hearts we leave behind is not to die." Larry's legacy lives on through the countless lives he touched with his kindness, humor, and unwavering faith. He inspired others with his selflessness, love for life, and dedication to serving his community.
Larry was known for his signature phrases, such as, "I can use that", as he found treasures to repurpose, and his exclamation, "You don't know my God", when speaking of his deep faith. His unique quirks, like his love for hot sauce and his unmatched ability to strike up conversations, will forever be remembered.
One of the many heartfelt anecdotes that capture his essence is his love for gardening, where he would talk to his plants as though they were part of the family. Larry was a man who saw beauty and potential everywhere, whether in the soil of his garden or the people around him.
Though we say goodbye with heavy hearts, we celebrate a life well-lived and a legacy of love, kindness, and cherished memories. Larry will forever be in our hearts, and his impact on our lives will never be forgotten.

We Entrusted Larry Hughes's Care To
Spielman Mortuary
Spielman Mortuary has been helping Saint Paul families since 1950 when Kenneth and Helen Spielman purchased the National Funeral Home. For over 30 years, the couple lived above the funeral home and took just one vacation. They sold the home in 1984 to the Willwerscheid family. We still operate Spielman Mortuary with the same traditions of pride, sensitivity, value, and attention to detail that the Spielmans followed for over three decades....
