Thelma Harriet Veis was born in Scobey, Montana on January 17, 1922, the seventh of eight children of Halvor and Ragna Halvorson. She passed peacefully on February 28, 2025, in Meridian, Idaho, at the age of 103.

Thelma’s family moved to Peerless when she was six years old, and she graduated from Peerless High School with the class of 1939. After graduation, she began working in Scobey, where she met her beloved husband, Marvin Veis, with whom she shared over seventy-four wonderful years of marriage.

Thelma and Marvin were married on May 22, 1943, in Jamestown, North Dakota, where Marvin was in training following his enlistment in the Army Air Corps. Thelma spent the war years with Marvin in Pecos, Texas, and Carlsbad, New Mexico. Her oldest son, Terry, was born in Carlsbad.

After returning to Scobey after the war, Thelma and Marvin had three more children – Bryan, Paula, and Kirk. Thelma and Marvin continued to live in Sobey after Marvin’s retirement, until moving to Idaho to be closer to their son, Terry, and daughter, Paula.

Thelma became a devoted Boise State football and basketball fan, never missing a chance to watch them on TV and always cheering on her teams with enthusiasm. She was delighted to receive visits from members of the BSU football and basketball teams on her recent birthdays, and cherished the autographed basketball and basketball, as well as other fan gear they gave her.

Thelma had a remarkable talent for sewing, cross-stitch, crocheting, knitting, embroidery, and needlepoint, crafting beautiful pieces with skill and love. She continued to crochet hats and scarves for donation to those in need until recently. Thelma was a gifted cook and legendary cookie maker, and her kitchen was always filled with warmth and delicious aromas. Her children and grandchildren looked forward to receiving the special Christmas box filled with many kinds of holiday treats. Some may remember the cookies she made for the annual Christmas open houses when she and Marvin had the Citizens State Bank. A talented card player, she excelled at bridge and other games. She missed her Scobey bridge club friends, with whom she played for over 40 years.

Thelma’s life was a testament to the power of family, kindness, and joy. She will be deeply missed but forever cherished in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.

She is survived by her four children, Terry (Peggy) of Meridian, Idaho; Bryan (Mimi) of Alexandria, Virginia; Paula (Ben) Schreiner of Twin Falls, Idaho, and Kirk (Susan) of Olympia, Washington; nine grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, and her brother-in-law Arlie Veis. She was preceded in death by all her siblings – Tom, Joe, Blanche, Clifford, Clarence (Indy), Rick, and Ernie.
