Donald Gene Elder, 91, passed away peacefully on March 19, 2025 in Lexington, Kentucky, surrounded by his loving family. Donald was born in Louisville KY on April 09, 1933 to Walter and Maude Jaggers Elder. 

 

Donald honorably served in the U.S. Army before dedicating his life to education. He pursued higher learning at Morehead State University, where he earned both a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Education. He continued his studies at Eastern Kentucky University, achieving a Rank I certification. His commitment to education led him to a distinguished career as a Teacher, Principal, and ultimately Superintendent of schools. After decades of shaping young minds and leading with dedication, he retired in 1990, leaving behind a legacy of commitment and excellence in education. 

 

A man of strong values and community spirit, Donald was a proud member of the Masonic Lodge for 52 years. His dedication to service, both in his profession and his fraternity, was a testament to his character and love for others. 

 

He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Maude Jaggers Elder, as well as his siblings. 

 

Donald is survived by his beloved wife of 70 years, Wanda Burke Elder; his children, Joni (Jim) Gosser, Jennifer Mann, and Jeff (Lora) Elder; his grandchildren, Jeremy (Earl Shirley) Mann, Regina (Justin) Whitt, Stephen Burke, Emilee (Michael) Evans, and Ryan Gosser; and his great-grandchildren, Kayven Gosser, Kyler Gosser, and Blake Shirley. He is also survived by several special nieces and nephews who held a dear place in his heart, along with his beloved dog, Maddie. 

 

Visitation will be held on March 26, 2025, from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Clark Legacy Center, 601 East Brannon Road, Nicholasville, KY 40356, with a service to follow at 6:00 PM, officiated by Minister Tony Smith. 

 

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Lexington Humane Society or St. Jude Children’s Hospital in Donald’s memory. 

 

Donald’s wisdom, kindness, and unwavering dedication to his family, career, and community will be cherished forever.
