The Island Funeral Home & Crematory
Richard "Dick" Wine Dodd
October 29th, 1929 - March 19th, 2025
Dr. Richard Wine Dodd, husband of the late Ann Fowlkes Dodd, died peacefully on March 19, 2025 surrounded by his family. He was born October 29, 1929 (the day the stock market crashed) to Harold Pendleton and Ula Wine Dodd in Bluefield, WVa. He grew up in Roanoke, VA and graduated from Jefferson High School in 1947, lettering in football and track. He graduated from Roanoke College in 1951 where he was captain of the varsity track team.
Ann and Dick were married in 1952 and lived in Richmond, VA while he completed his medical degree at The Medical College of Virginia in 1955. After an internship at Johnston-Willis Hospital, Dick served in the military as an Army Captain at Ft. Belvoir, VA for two years. Ann and Dick then moved to Baltimore where he completed a four-year residency program in Otolaryngology at Johns Hopkins Hospital. Returning to Richmond in 1962, he joined Dr. Warren Montague in private practice and was joined by Dr. Thomas G Meeks in later years. He practiced as an ENT for over 30 years, serving as an instructor in MCV/ENT clinics and as chief of staff at Stuart Circle Hospital and Richmond Eye & Ear Hospital. He was a long time member of First Presbyterian Church and served as a Deacon as well as on various committees. He was also a member of The Country Club of Virginia and a member of several golf groups: including The Fifty Fivers, The Captains and The Bogeys. In addition to being with his friends on the golf course, Dick loved going to “the country”, his farm in Goochland where he refueled by bush hogging the fields on his 1952 Ford N8 tractor (when he could get it started!).
In 2014, Ann and Dick moved to Hilton Head Island to be closer to their children, living in their Sea Pines beach home. Hilton Head was a special place for the family and great memories were made at the beach house with all the children and grandchildren gathered under one roof, for numerous holidays and always for Labor Day weekend (Nana’s birthday!)
When Ann passed away in 2017, Dick moved to the TidePointe retirement community where he made many wonderful friends. An avid lover of all birds, but especially bluebirds, Dick proposed a project to build bluebird houses to some neighbors. He and several others built the houses in their garages and to this day the houses remain scattered around the grounds for all to enjoy.
Dick moved to Broad Creek Care Center in 2023 when he needed more assistance. The care he received there was exceptional and his family is deeply grateful to the compassionate staff during his final 2 years. From the front desk to the therapy teams to the nursing staff, everyone was thoughtful and kind.
He is survived by his daughters; Whitney Dodd Godwin (Scott) of Atlanta, GA; Sally Dodd Pellarin (Danny) of Charlotte, NC; a son, Richard Fowlkes Dodd (Leanne) of Savannah, GA; and seven grandchildren: Will Godwin (Aristya), Graham Godwin, Tyler Pellarin (Anthony), Wyatt Pellarin (Jadey), Martha Ann Clark (Will), Margaret Dodd, and Catherine Dodd.
A graveside service will be held at Evergreen Burial Park in Roanoke, VA on Saturday, June 12 at 11am with a reception to follow at Hotel Roanoke. Donations may be made in Richard W. Dodd’s name to The Appalachian Trail Conservancy at AppalachianTrail.org .
