Evelyn D. Bowerman
August 27th, 1930 - March 28th, 2025
Evelyn D. Bowerman peacefully passed away from natural causes at the age of 94, in her home in Marshville, NY early Friday morning, March 28, 2025, surrounded by her children.
Evelyn Marilyn was born August 27, 1930, in Nelliston, NY, the daughter of Chester J. Dygert and Mildred Tibbals Dygert and lived all of her life in the hamlet of Marshville. She attended and graduated from Canajoharie Central Schools. After graduating high school, she helped her father on the family farm and also ran a milk can pick-up for local farms to deliver milk to the dairy processing plant in Nelliston.
On July 14, 1951, she married Silas G. Bowerman (deceased 12/7/2010) and together they raised eight children on his parents’ family dairy farm. At various times Evelyn also held down a newspaper delivery route for the Amsterdam Recorder; worked as a health aide at the Palatine Nursing Home in Palatine Bridge; and cared in her home for many of her immediate relatives.
As a person who professed she "didn't know how to boil water" at the time she was married she went on to become an excellent self-taught cook who never needed to follow a recipe unless it was for a cake. Her vegetable gardens were massive. She enjoyed sewing for her family, watching horror movies on late Friday nights with the kids, playing cards with neighbors and cousins, reading novels, painting ceramics, hand-quilting, and putting together jigsaw puzzles which made her husband Silas groan because once a puzzle was dumped out on the dining room table there would be no more meals until the project was complete. She was a loyal fan of her much beloved Yankees. She spent many hours caring and providing for her husband and children and grandchildren. She was a steadfast source of strength and dependability for her family and knew how to do anything and everything. Evelyn was a member of the Marshville Evangelical Church, Bowman's Creek Grange in Buel, and a founding member of the Silver Spur Riding Club; but most of all loved events and activities that included her extensive family.
She was predeceased by her husband, parents, son-in-law Gary Parker, sisters Clara Hency and Shirley Dygert, brother-in-law Richard Dygert, niece Terry Dygert, nephew John Moyer, and Aunt Hazel Scott. She is survived by her children: Ella L. Bowerman, June E. Parker, S. Gifford Bowerman and wife Ann, George C. Bowerman and wife Belinda, James H. Bowerman and wife Lorie, Gerald A. Bowerman, Christine R. Rush, Judith M. Bowman and husband Walter (Nate), as well as twelve grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Calling hours will be from 11:30am to 1pm on Thursday, April 3, 2025, at Betz, Rossi, Bellinger & Stewart Family Funeral Home, 69 Otsego Street, Canajoharie, NY 13317. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home at 1pm. Internment will take place in the Fort Plain Cemetery at a future date as weather permits. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation as remembrance in Evelyn's name to the Community Hospice Foundation, 310 S. Manning Blvd, Albany, New York 12208; or the Ayres Memorial Animal Shelter, 133 Hilltop Rd., Sprakers, NY 12166.
