Dean grew up on a farm in Quincy, Il. where he fostered the desire to care for animals. In his youth he was active in 4H and sports, especially baseball and basketball. After high school, he went on to the University of Illinois and graduated with his doctorate in veterinary medicine in 1971. He practiced in Decatur, Illinois for a few years before moving to Florida where he opened his own practice in Largo, Florida. This practice, “ The Animal Hospital of Largo” he owned and operated with his wife Debbie, until 2006 when he semi-retired. He worked as a relief veterinarian for several years throughout Pinellas County. Caring for animals was always his passion. He brought home many rescue animals for all of us to care for, and always had advice on animals for those who asked. He was active in many organizations in the county which included the Pinellas County Veterinary Medical Association, Anona United Methodist Church, Hands of Healing, and the Rotary of Indian Rocks Beach. He enjoyed traveling and went on many trips with his family throughout the United States and internationally. He was a master diver and went on many scuba diving trips. He loved the water and had been boating and diving all around Florida. He had other passions which included a love for photography, gardening, woodworking, growing orchids, and driving his tractor on his tree farm in Southern Georgia. He especially loved being with his grandchildren and spending time doing fun activities with them. This included things like going to the beach, out to eat, boating, various theme parks and many other outdoor activities. He was a kind and generous man that all people and animals loved dearly.
