JOHN STEWART MILLER JR. WAS BORN IN POCAHONTUS, VIRGINIA TO JOHN STEWART MILLER SR. AND LENA DOTSON MILLER ON JUNE 9, 1923. HE WENT TO MEET HIS LORD MARCH 28, 2025, AT THE AGE OF 101. 

 

HIS FATHER WAS A COAL MINER AND PAINTER, AND HIS MOTHER A JOURNALIST. GROWING UP IN BOTH RICHMOND, VIRGINIA AND WASHINGTON, D.C., JOHN GRADUATED FROM BOY’S HOME HIGH SCHOOL IN COVINGTON, VIRGINIA AND JOINED THE NAVY. WHILE IN THE SERVICE DURING WWII JOHN SERVED AS AN AVIATION STRUCTURAL MECHANIC, AND WAS STATIONED IN COCOA BEACH, FLORIDA, NORTH BEND AND ASTORIA, OREGON, AND OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA. 

 

WHILE STATIONED IN OREGON, JOHN MET AND MARRIED HIS WIFE SUE CARDWELL. THEY WERE MARRIED 64 YEARS WHEN SUE PASSED AWAY IN 2009. AFTER HIS DISCHARGE FROM THE NAVY, JOHN AND SUE MOVED TO EUGENE, WHERE HE EMBARKED ON A SUCCESSFUL CAREER AS A BOOKKEEPER AND DISPATCHER FOR EUGENE SAND AND GRAVEL AND AS A SALESPERSON FOR FARWEST STEEL. JOHN WAS ALSO ACTIVE IN LOCAL POLITICS AS LANE COUNTY REPUBLICAN CENTRAL COMMITTEE CHAIRPERSON IN 1958-1960, AND IN CIVIC AFFAIRS LEADING THE LANE COUNTY MUSCULAR DYSTROPHY CAMPAIGN, AND IN SERVING AS ASSISTANT CHAIRPERSON OF UNITED WAY. 

 

IN RETIREMENT JOHN AND SUE TRAVELED ACROSS THE UNITED STATES AND TO MEXICO AND WERE AVID CRUISERS AND GOLFERS, AS WELL AS OREGON DUCK AND TRAILBLAZER FANS. BOTH JOHN AND SUE WERE MEMBERS OF FIRST CHRISTIAN CHURCH FOR 35 YEARS, AND SINCE 1984 MEMBERS OF GRACE COMMUNITY FELLOWSHIP, WHERE THEY SERVED AS GREETERS FOR MANY YEARS. 

 

JOHN WAS PRECEDED IN DEATH BY HIS MOTHER AND FATHER, AND HIS BROTHER JAMES. HE IS SURVIVED BY HIS SON JOHN III, HIS DAUGHTER-IN-LAW LINDA (BUSSELL), TWO GRANDSONS, MIKE (WIFE ELIZABETH) AND KEVIN (WIFE LAURA), A GREAT GRANDDAUGHTER CLARA AND TWO GREAT GRANDSONS, JULIAN AND JOSEPH. THE PASSION OF HIS LIFE WAS HIS FAMILY AND FAITH. 

 

HE WAS A LOVING HUSBAND, FATHER, GRANDFATHER, GREAT GRANDFATHER, AND FRIEND TO ALL. REMEMBRANCES TO GRACE COMMUNITY FELLOWSHIP.
